Pros and Cons of going to uni in London

Its not rubbish as such, but for a university student, i think it is

I have been living in London for the last 6 years and can honestly say that it is a fun city, but as time goes you will probably get tired of hearing the sirens every two minutes ...The tube, train and bus services are not only frustratingly full of people and often late, but also quite expensive, but then again as a student you get discounts on Oyster card etc. It is a great place to go out, as the choice of clubs, pubs and bars is extremely large and you will always find a place to have a bite to eat at 4 am  It is, however, expensive. Provided you want to live in a reasonably safe area, you would end up paying approx. £100 per single room per week. Despite the crunch, rent prices did not go down, so it is still roughly the same as it was 6 months ago.It isn't the safest place in the world and you have to be sensible in choosing when and on which streets is it safe to walk, but if you dont hang out around Seven Sisters at 3am on your own, you should be ok! (no offence to anyone who is based around there, but my memory of that place is not very nice:frown:) Other then that, you wouid enjoy it, but would have to be careful in how you manage your budget...

Yeah, in some aspects. The amount of money I've lost as a student so far in Cardiff, I would dread to imagine how much it would have been in London. :/

I only applied to QMUL in London but pushing past the annoying crowds, the pollution, the attitude of the university, roadworks and horrible boxy accommodation put me right off and that was that. x_x
The thing is, there aren't that many prestigious unis outside London are there?
Pillar of Autumn

Con: [unrelated to the pro] - considerably more violent crime than most other cities in the UK.

Lived in london my whole life, only experience violent crime once and that was in the outskirts. Its more hyped up than people realize
Pros: Fantastic quality of girls

Cons: Random erections. Too many girls, too little time..

When people say london is expensive, how expensive is expensize? Or did I just a 'how long is a piece of string question'
Pros: you're in London. One of the best cities in the world.
Cons: you're in London. One of the most expensive cities in the world.

Now, London is a great city and all, but, although I've never been there, I can't imagine it being much of a student city. Maybe I'm wrong, of course. But I'm currently in quite a student friendly city and I just show my student card and get discounts in most shops, pubs and free entry before certain times to some clubs. It's wonderful to get stuff in an already cheap city for even cheaper.

Well we can't take the average price of every single item from every single shop/bar/pub and compare it to the average price of every single item from every single shop/bar/pub from every single other city in Britain. We can, however, use knowledge that we already have to work out that, on average, London life is a little more expensive than life in other cities.

I think it has a "student atmosphere" of sorts. Besides, there is SO much to do, and you're studying at [for the most part] top quality institutions. Sure, it can be expensive, but it's as expensive as you want it to be. It's regarded as one of the greatest cities in the world, and it's just an awesome place. I've been back home for two weeks for winter vacation and am pretty much bored stupid, I love having everything basically on my front door [or a short tube ride away]

London > anywhere else in the UK ANYDAY

Pro: central, very busy, loads to do,
cons: probably not a campus uni.. my friends at UCL and said thats one thing she really regrets about going there.
Also the noise of living in London, constantly being able to hear traffic all the time. Also safety stuff.. my friend had a veryy bad experience coming back from clubbing in London during her first term.. coped amazingly well with it i have to say, far better than alot of people would have.

The rest of UK looks like a poor village from the 1700 compared to london.

and THAT says everything.

London4life peace out.
It depends what you want from uni life and what kind of nights out you're into. Loads of people come to london for uni and have the best time of their lives so to say its not a student city isn't completely true. There;s plenty of places to go, house parties, student unions, one or two student nights and all sorts. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I wish I'd gone to some other place.

One thing I've got to stress is that it is not as dangerous as people make out or assume, some of the really cheap really good areas (new cross, dulwich, peckham and camberwell) get overlooked by people who are scared of getting mugged and killed or just generally a bit weary of large groups of non whites, its these areas that have the most going for them in terms of student lifestyle, espesciially new cross. I walk around by myself at like 3-5 in the morning with no qualms at all.

IMO VERY expensive. I'm spending on average £150 to £200 per week EXCLUDING accomadation @ ~£130/week.

It depends entirely on how you live though. You can budget £50/week and still go out couple times.

It's worth every single penny though for the fun as long as you stay trouble free.

Anything can happen after leaving a club @ 3am. A close friend of mine was stabbed in the shoulder and another was bricked. Both lived to tell the tale but after a heavy night out its taxi's all the way.
