my teacher has done a really poor job of actually explaining what this is going to be like and i’m hearing conflicting stories online
is the project a prompt given to us like N5/H or is it something i have to come up with alone?

I would recommend looking at the AH Computing Project Specification.
You come up with a project idea and must integrate two areas of the course e.g. SDD as the major and DDD as the minor.
The project must integrate concepts from the Advanced Higher Course.
The SQA removed SDD and WDD (i.e. SDD as major and WDD as minor or WDD as major and SDD as minor) projects this year so you need to integrate your project with databases.
Project criteria
Your project must be one of the following:
software design and development (using object-oriented programming) integrating with
database design and development
software design and development (using procedural programming) integrating with
database design and development
database design and development integrating with software design and development or
web design and development
web design and development integrating with database design and development
Your project must have:
no more than six end-user requirements
four functional requirements that relate to the Advanced Higher concepts
three functional requirements that relate to integration
between four and eight additional functional requirements, including at least two
functional requirements that relate to validation of keyboard input
