Anyone going to do English at the University of Sheffield?

I’m starting my English language and literature degree next month at the University of Sheffield. And I’m really worried and scared about making friends. I really don’t know how to talk to people, I stutter a lot and I’m just super awkward in general.

So I was wondering if maybe I can meet some people from my course here. Anyone going to start English at the University of Sheffield! I have already chosen my modules heh. But I have no one talk to about my choices or pretty much anything 😢

Hi,

I just wanted to reassure you, as a fellow English student. You will have the best time and making friends will be so much easier and more natural than you first think. I was a commuter student for four years and everyone told me I would find it hard to make friends more than anyone else because of not living there. This was not the case! Of course you have to put the effort in, but this will come so natural to you, as it has done with everyone I have known.

My best piece of advice is honestly try not to worry, as the thought is always worse than the actual issue you have built in your head. Remember everyone is in the exact same boat as you, so you may as well make the most of experiences with new people. I found joining University of Sheffield group chats and pages before starting was a great way to get chatting to course mates ready for the first meet up. Also, I recommend joining as many societies as possible, from the get go. This is a great way to meet new people and socialise outside of uni with likeminded people, who may not necessarily be living with you or on your course.

And remember have fun, don't let your worries get in the way, these years will be some of your greatest ones! Let me know if I can help you in any other way

Thank you for kind words! I will try my best. I am really excited to join societies though a bit anxious. I don’t think I will be to join many because I can’t afford it but that’s okay. Thank you I will try my best. I just struggle so much with social anxiety but hopefully I will manage it just fine.😊

That’s nice!! Are you looking forward to it? Honestly law seems so interesting but it will probably be hard hehe I was considering it but then I realised I only love reading fiction. Good luck with the start of the course! I hope it goes super smoothly for you!

Hi MyAria, 👋

I'm also very glad to hear you are starting your English degree soon at Sheffield. I did my undergrad English Lit there, as well as my Master's and now my PhD. I can ensure everyone is so friendly, both in the department and the other students.

It can be a bit nerve-wracking starting a new society but they do offer give it a go events where you can try out the society before committing to becoming a member. Here is the link to view some of the upcoming events so you can see if there are any that you might be interested in. I was also nervous before joining a society (stitch society) in undergrad but everyone is friendly which makes it so much easier and relaxed. 😀

There are also services offered by the university regarding mental health and any other difficulties you may experience so please don't feel like you can't reach out if you need any support in that regard. Here are some useful links just in case they come in handy:

Mental/Physical Support
Student Services Information desk (SSiD)
Range of services for students
Central Welfare and Guidance

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the course or anything else about studying/living in Sheffield and I'd be more than happy to help!

Best wishes,
Phoebe ☺️
