English language remark

I was one mark away from a grade 6 in English language should I get it remarked as I want to go to a Russell group uni.

Yes. Even if it didn't matter for uni (and I don't think it does in this case), do it anyway. No guarantee it'll go up in grade, but the mark will most likely change because it's an essay subject, there's always subjectivity in the marking.

Hi @weap

I think this would be a case where opting for a remark would be a good idea as the margins are very close. In addition, as English Language is an essay based subject the answers will be subjective.

You will need to consider the risk of your mark potentially decreasing but as this should not shift you below a grade 6 if you are in the higher range of that bracket then I believe this is a good option.

I wish you luck for the remarking 😄

Hey, I am in the exact situation. I was one mark away from a grade 6 and am currently getting it remarked. Its never deep if your mark goes down because your most likely going to be in the same grade boundary. After looking at most universities, they all (usually) need an entry requirement of 6 for English lang. Also if you don't move up the grade in the remark, I've been recommended to resit the exam in year 12.

hi there,

I think it is best to have a discussion with your english teacher as they will be able to assess if you have a good shot of a grade 7. From what you have said, you were only one mark away so it sounds like you have but worth the double check! As you are in the higher range of the boundary, if (worse case scenario) your grade were to drop, it looks like you will still be at a grade 6 regardless.

Best to consult with your english teacher. Congrats on the grade 6, lets hope you can make it a 7!

I was predicted an 8 so the 5 came as a shock but at this point I just want a good enough grade to be able to apply to good universities

Hi there,

that is totally understandable. Like I said, you have a good shot at a grade 7. When you say good universities - I assume it is Russel group? A grade 7 will definitely be useful so fingers crossed you get it

Good afternoon,

I am so sorry to hear that.

But I would like you to keep in mind that a grade 6 in English language is still a good grade.

For example, LSE require you to have a grade 6 in English language (https://www.lse.ac.uk/study-at-lse/Undergraduate/Prospective-Students/How-to-Apply/Admissions-Information).

All courses at UCL require GCSE or equivalent qualification passes in English Language and Maths at grade 5 or higher, which you have achieved (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/culture-online/case-studies/2021/mar/how-important-are-your-gcses-when-applying-ucl)
UCL and LSE are very good uni’s it really is not the end of the world. You just need to smash your post-16 qualifications now!

RG unis aren't the best dor all subjects and I'm surprsied a rep would think so.

Bath is far better than many RG for example!
