Picking your elective modules to match your goals: MSc in Human-Computer Interaction

As a postgraduate HCID student at City, St George’s, one of the most exciting parts of the course can be selecting your elective modules. Each elective offers unique skills, perspectives and knowledge in different domains.

Here’s a breakdown of the options available to help with your decision-making:

1.

Web Design and Development: This module focuses on the technical and creative side of building websites. You’ll learn about web technologies, coding (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and how to bring interaction design to life on the web. It is highly practical and hands-on, teaching you skills that are in high demand. It is great to strengthen your technical confidence. This module, however, requires some comfort with coding, which may be challenging if you’re not inclined towards programming.

2.

Creativity in Design: This module explores creative and critical approaches to design, from speculative design and reflective practice to co-design methods. This year’s brief focused on Smart City Green Spaces using technologies like IoT, sensors and digital twins. It helps to build transferable creativity skills that can be applied to any design role. It is less technical and more focused on concept development and design exploration.

3.

Data Visualisation: This module teaches how to represent complex information visually and meaningfully. You’ll work with datasets to design effective, insightful visualisations for digital interfaces. It is highly relevant to product and UX roles, specifically in data-rich systems. It offers a balance of design and technical skills. However, it can require some coding or an analytical tool.

4.

Visual Reality Design and Development: This module dives into the immersive tech space (VR/AR/MR). You will gain hands-on experience with VR hardware and Unity, learning interaction design for immersive environments. It offers hands-on technical expertise and focuses on the growing relevance in niche sectors like healthcare, education and entertainment.

Ultimately, your choice depends on your career goals and interests. Think about whether you want to deepen technical skills, broaden creative approaches, or explore emerging technologies.
