Hiya,
So assuming you mean the University of Glasgow when you say UofG, this was my journey staying at everything from private halls of residence to private flats.
In my first year I stayed at university halls (QMR - Queen Margaret Residences) and I really enjoyed my time. It was a great way to meet a lot of the students in my year and make friends. I know a couple students who stayed at home or in private flats this year and while they found it a bit difficult socialising immediately it was still possible.
In my second year I chose to stay in private student halls with a lot of my friends from the first year. Most students I knew at this point moved into private flats leased to students by landlords with an HMO license. The reason I chose private flats over private halls was since we had a large group and wanted to live together, which was easier with flats together as rented our in a private hall of residence. We stayed at West Village and it was also simpler in terms of the utilities being included in the bills alongside rent.
It is less common for second year students to be in the University owned halls of residence since you are not guaranteed and first years are given the first choice, but also since most students tend to stay with the same year group? However, there are accommodation support staff who are students from later years who stay in University halls of residence alongside their role to support first year students at the halls.
In fourth year, I stayed in a private flat rented out with a landlord closer to town. So, if you've got more questions about this or anything else please get back to me
I hope this helps x
