Pharmacy at Kingston University

I’ve seen that Kingston often has a bad reputation online, however I wanted to ask if that was really the case. I’d like to study pharmacy, and Kingston is nearby and I just wanted to know, is it really that bad?

I got the same situation last year when applying for pharmacy course,as it is the closest university for studying pharmacy , i saw that their teaching quality is at highest rank via UCAS but the QS ranking is low to the ground, which i given up for applying it and i am a pharmacy student in a different university now. However please be in mind that the pharmacy course is not determine by the university but the GPhC,therefore no one will care where you graduated from for pharmacist , as their standard is universal no matter which uni.It depends on what you think is most important for you ,is the ranking ? The distance from university ? Or teaching quality?

Hi,

I don't personally study pharmacy here but I do have friends who do and enjoy it. i also really enjoy studying here and I do fashion promotion and communication.

I would really recommend coming to an open day. It is a great chance to get a feel for the university as to what it might be like to study there, see the facilities and speak to current students and lectures. This personally really helped me make a decision. You can find the upcoming dates on the website Open Days and events | Kingston University London

I will also link some other useful posts I have done about Kingston that might help you with your decision:

Hi there
I study biological sciences at Kingston University, so it feels close enough to answer as we don’t have a pharmacy student working on the rep team. We share a good amount of lectures and lab space on occasion so hopefully my reply will have some credence.

I haven't actually checked the reputation of Kingston too much online, so while I know there are complaints, I’m not really sure what they are in detail. I will just give you a general overview.
I am only capable of giving biased and incomplete information because I only have experience in this university. Keep that in mind.

And here is my honest opinion. It is a good university. My genetics course has some very knowledgeable lecturers, and some great recent hires who're already beginning to implement improvements. The biomed society recently started a science based newspaper, the uni is starting a new experimental program where different students from different courses collaborate on projects. They actually did the trial run of it last year with pharmacy students and marketing students. The career centre has made a lot of new hires and starting with some pretty cool ideas.
Every staff member I have worked with has been going the extra mile to make things better, and it’s a really great environment.

I actually suspect the reason there’s a reputation is because there are a lot of students on our courses here, to be put frankly, do not care. They applied for university because their parents pressured them to and this is a relatively easy university to get into. There is a good percentage of students you see on the first day here but don’t show up for any more lectures. It’s also a London uni which means it’s close enough that students feel like they can commute without getting a flat and then they don’t bother actually commuting because it’s hard.
But in a crowd of people who aren’t actually enthusiastic about university, those who do shine. The professors are happy for anyone who actually tried and gives so much support. By the second year the cohort has clearly separated into people who try and just didn’t happen to get good grades on their A-levels, and people who are here because ehhh why not?

And if you are worried about your future career Kingston can lead to some great ones.
For example, Francis Crick, one of the most prestigious research institutes, only hires less than 20 summer interns every year. I was able to get short listed. I didn’t pass the interview but that’s my own failings. My friend from the year above me got the job.

A Kingston degree can help you get into great things, but you do need to put effort in. I love my time here and hope you will too.

I’ve been to the open day on Saturday and in terms of the facilities they provide for pharmacy it’s really good. I’m interested in applying to it this year since it’s closer to me. It was mentioned in the open day that Kingston was one of the unis to score the highest in a specific part of the oriel exam.

Hi, as a second year pharmacy student at Kingston uni, it’s honestly not too bad at all after having passed first year. The lectures are clear and informative and the people in my course are genuinely so nice and helpful. Placements are good and the sim suites are also great and every session we have there is very informative! What I will say though is that there’s a lack of clarity and guidance when it comes to how exactly we should study or revise, and what material is actually important and needed. Other than that it’s genuinely fine, and I’m honestly kind of enjoying it. The course is joint with St George’s, and the lectures we have there are incredible and it’s very clear what’s important and what isn’t. At the end of the day, the course is accredited by the gphc and the uni you go to for pharmacy genuinely doesn’t matter, so ignore the rankings as they’re irrelevant. It’s a solid choice as it’s in London, so I think it’s worth applying. All the people complaining are from years ago, but the course has changed now to include independent prescribing, and thr team managing the course is also all new. Hope this helps!

Hi @Aksksjjdjs

Thank you so much for your response, I am sure this will be really useful for all those looking to study pharmacy at Kingston.

University is definitely much more independent, I find I just need to reach out for guidance and my lectures are great and if I ever email or ask for help they will be there.

I have previously created a post with some revision tips Revision Techniques That Helped Me - The Student Room
I have found that you just have to try a lot of different ways to work before finding what works best for you.

Thank you again.
