Is A-level Literature, history, politics and philosophy a good combination?

Hello all,
I will be applying to my 6th form (HWSF) in a few months, and I wanted to know if History, Literature, Politics, and Philosophy is a good combination or not. I want to study Law, and in school, I am strong in all of them. Do you think it's too limiting for my career choice?

Those subjects sound pretty good to me.
You dont need any specific subjects for law (just certain grades) but an essay subject always helps.
With those subjects you could do various different things, so they arent too limiting.

1) You dont need 4 A levels. It wont give you any advantage for a Law application, and if anything, you risk messing up all of your grades because you are taking on too much. Remember, AAA will always look better than ABBB - and that could cost you a Uni place.
2) There are no required subjects for Law. You could be taking 3 STEM subjects, it would be fine. So, it makes sense to choose 3 subjects that you will enjoy studying, and where you feel confident of good grades. Forget any ideas about 'what looks good' - Unis really are just interested in the grades.

At the 6th form I want to go to, 4 A-levels are mandatory. Is this something worth reconsidering 6th forms over?

Hi,

That sounds like a good combination, especially if you’re interested in studying Law at university. Subjects such as History, Politics, English Literature and Philosophy all develop skills that universities value for Law, including critical thinking, essay writing, analysis and building arguments.

As mentioned above, Law doesn’t require specific A-levels, so universities mainly look for academically rigorous and essay-based subjects, which yours definitely are.

Most importantly, it’s great that you enjoy these subjects and feel confident in them, as this will make the biggest difference to your motivation and grades. Since you’re planning to take four A-levels, it’s important to keep on top of the work. The workload can be challenging at times, but with good organisation it can definitely be managed.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your studies!
