Mile End is probably not as bad. Queen Mary is a good uni generally.

I go to QMUL. The area is generally safe. I wouldn't go to the park in the dark or be holding my phone down the street, but apart from that it is ok. Generally, just don't be stupid. The uni campus has 24/7 security that you can speak to if there is a problem. Most of the private accommodations will have security as well.

The posters above are right on the money. If you go to the Mile End campus you will basically never venture out of the main street, which, being the main street, is safe enough, but beware the phone snatchers. I probably wouldn't linger around at night in Mile End but neither do I feel particularly unsafe, as there are always lots of students about.
