Teacher Reference importance in apps

Do universities put much weight on teacher references in the UCAS app, for someone applying from overseas? More specifically relating to Cambridge?

From what I've been told, it's fairly important. It does vary a little by course - if, for example, your course didn't have an admissions exam, then the uni only really has your personal statement, predicted grades, and reference to work with. Grades are a little redundant at Cambridge since the vast majority of applicants will have comparable grades (there's only so well you can do, after all) so it often boils down to personal statements and references. So references make up a significant portion of the initial applicant info.

Not much. They are fully aware that some countries don't have a culture of giving references and some have a culture of only speaking in hyperbole etc. Overseas references are often very 'odd' compared to UK ones where schools understand a general 'pattern' of reference-giving, so it is one of the least relevant parts of the application, especially for overseas applicants.
