st john's vs balliol college oxford uni

hi all (current and past st john's/balliol oxford students), i am applying to oxford this year and am deciding between st john's and balliol, and I have a few questions regarding both of them. would really appreciate some responses on this!

st. john's
1. i've heard from several past students that the atmosphere at st. john's can be quite overbearing i.e. relatively strict monitoring of students and less freedom of movement than at some other colleges. this was from a few years ago though, so i was wondering 1) if this is true at all and 2) what is the atmosphere like now?

2. what is the accommodation like and how easy is it to find a place to stay after you're not allowed to live on campus anymore? does the college offer much support on this? are most people satisfied with their accommodation?
3. any student societies/clubs at st. john's and balliol you would recommend?
4. if anyone is a current/past student at st. john's or balliol studying english language and literature (or any similar english course), would you mind giving some subject-specific advice? i.e. how to study effectively for english at oxford, etc.

i appreciate this is plenty, so would be really grateful for any and all replies. thank you

edit: i accidentally put this post into the chat forum so have reposted on a more relevant forum instead since i couldn't change this

Balliol is one of oldest colleges in Oxford. It also one of the most cosmopolitan. It also highly academic.

St. John's gets a higher number of 1sts and 2:1's and has cheaper food and drinks, 2 gyms on-site and accommodation offered on-site for all 3 or 4 years. There is also a new library completed in 2019 with up to 200 spaces.

I know I would choose St. John's. Even more so with the £400 book grant each term. 🙂
