PPE or Economics?

First post and I understand this is late of a decision but should I apply for PPE@Ox or Economics@Cam?

I’ve been consistently getting 90-95th percentile for section A of the TSA but am not doing very well on the TMUA. While I need TMUA for some of my
options anyway, I have been getting only 12/20 in times past papers, roughly 5.5-6.0 which is still below the average offer holder.

I’d rather apply where my chances lie but I’m hoping my grade history and personal statement brings me through (11x9s, A*A*A*A* predicted, A* on EPQ).

Any advice would be much much appreciated.

I was deciding between Econ and ppe and I settled for ppe, I’m not aiming for as high unis as you but I’m sure you already know ppe is more qualitative whereas Econ is more quantitative. For me, this difference helped me decide. I thought would I rather spend a day researching and writing and essay, or doing complex maths and for me the essay was the clear option. I hope this helps you out !

Thank you and that is very helpful. I am also considering career opportunities post-uni. Id like to work in finance and concerned that PPE would limit my options. Did you consider this in your decision too?

Yes, while a finance career doesn’t really stick out to me. I read somewhere, most likely on Reddit, that most firms care more about the prestige of the uni rather than the degree. Ofc this excludes the highly quantitative jobs. But given this if you look at the modules for different ppe courses, a lot of unis allow you to do a lot of statistics and econometrics modules still, so you still learn similar skills. So I don’t think it would make a huge difference unless going fro the massively data driven roles, but I’m not an expert so take everything I say with a grain of salt 😂

PPE is a world famous degree. So many graduates work in Investment Banking, Hedge Funds, Law firms, Think Tanks and many other careers. So, rest assured a PPE degree will open many doors, especially from Oxford and the LSE. 🙂
