Help with re-letting

So I’ve had what could charitably be called a mess of a time lately, and long story short there was a mistake with my A level results that only got rectified a couple days ago, but it caused my grade to go up which has allowed me to get a place at Lancaster. However, before that I had accepted a place at Newcastle and booked accommodation to make sure I had some since it isn’t guaranteed and I wasn’t sure my results would get fixed in time. I’m now going to Lancaster, but I’m stuck with a room in Newcastle (with a private provider via managed partnership) that I’m going to have to pay for unless I can re-let it before the move in date next week.
Does anyone have any experience or advice with re-letting uni accommodation, especially on such short notice?

Hi @FreddieB09

Use websites like Rightmove, use the Newcastle university Facebook page and post about your room, join the university's fresher's groupchat and send a message about your room, you can even try sending an e-mail to Newcastle's student union where they might help ([email protected]). Try and spread the word out around the university's students as much as possible. There are so many last-minute room swaps and international students who might confirm their place last minute.
All the best 🤗

Hey FreddieB09,

So first things first, double-check what your room contract says. I would imagine that now your grades are confirmed and your deposit is paid, I would say you will struggle but best to have a look.

Secondly, get your room asap online onto groups like Facebook (Most unis have a freshers Facebook) or any Snapchat Uni stories. Make sure you mention where it is, the price and what's near it, like shops etc. The more places you can get it online, the more likely you can pop up on interested people's feeds.

As mentioned already, speak to your SU - they may have people who are looking for accommodation, so they might be able to help. As well, speak to your accommodation provider; if they are full, they may be able to help you if they have people still looking/on reserve. But this is unlikely.

Lastly, be prepared - you may have to offer more for the room. For example, paying a month of rent in advance in return for trading the rest of the contract. It may be unideal, but at least it's not a year you're paying for.

If you want any more tips, don't hesitate to ask!
Most importantly, good luck!
Koen.
