Overcoming procrastination

Let’s be honest, procrastination is something every student battles. From leaving essays you have known about for months until the night before submission or endlessly scrolling through social media instead of revising. It can feel impossible to break this cycle. I’ve learnt a few strategies that work, and I want to share them with you.

Breaking tasks into bite sized pieces for example if you have a 1,500-word essay I would advise to break that into 300 words which could be completed over the course of 5 days or if that's too much 150 words over the course of 10 days.

Setting a realistic deadline if your assignment is due in two weeks try aiming to finish one week early, so you have time to correct mistakes and tweak sentences. You can use apps, planners or sticky notes to motivate you with thinking about the due date.

Create or attend study-friendly environment - there are libraries in Kingston University set up to create the best space for completing assignments, if you are using at home spaces making sure your space is clutter free, turning off phone notifications and even listening to instrumental music can help with concentration.

Finally reward yourself! Rewards like a coffee break after finishing a section of your assignment or watching your favourite series can help positively reinforce you to be more productive.

Procrastination isn’t about laziness it’s just about how you brain responds to stress. By following these tips, you will see an improvement.

If anyone else has tips to add pop it under this blog it would help a lot!!☺️
