Meaning of "darle la vuelta a la tortilla"

Hi everyone,
I came across the phrase "darle la vuelta a la tortilla" in a Spanish article.
Here’s the full sentence:
"Cuando parecía que todo iba mal, supo darle la vuelta a la tortilla."
Context: The article was about a football team that was losing but then won the match.
The text is from Spain.
My question:
Does this phrase mean “to turn the situation around,” or is there a more natural equivalent in English?
Thanks in advance!
Not a Spanish speaker, but Google translate gives it as "turn the tables", which is a very common English phrase for reversing a situation, (in particular getting the upper hand in a situation where the other party previous had it).
