Chances of getting into Dentistry?

Chances of getting into dentistry - my son got seven 8s and two 6s in GCSEs (the 6s were in English Language and Literature). He’s in first year of A-Levels now studying Chemistry, Biology and Psychology. Does he have any chance to get into dentistry or is it too competitive for his GCSE results?

he has very competitive gcse grades as many dental schools weigh 8s and 9s as the same and only look at the top 8 or 7 gcse grades like KCL, some even ask for just 6 gcse's at a 7 or over like glasgow. What mainly matters is his UCAT grade but that depends on what unis he wants to go to. Places like Newcastle and Bristol only care about the UCAT and rank people based on that or have a cut off score( I can't entirely remember) and then on the other end of the spectrum places like dundee have increadibly low ucat cut offs as they want high a level predictions like A*A*A even though they give conditional offers of AAA. Cardiff and KCL take both ucat and gcse's into consideration. The only disadvantage i can think of is at QMULs(Barts) where a 9 would get 4 points but an 8/7 would get 3 points but a high ucat score would definetly counteract that, (excuse my spelling i just did my UCAT and my brain is fried) but he has an amazing shot finding work experience is also really important, if you know any dentists it would help there is also work experience at various dental schools in their hospitals. I'd also say find work experience at a dental practice and quickly because year 12 goes by really fast and finding work experience is really hard. Read a bunch of articles, a dental book to put on his personal statement and he should also study hard throughout the year so he gets predicted amazing grades that he will actually be able to get as well

Please read the Dental Schools Council Admissions booklet, which sets out selection criteria for each dental school.
The only school ruled out is Birmingham which requires a 7 in English. I would also be wary of the QUB which weighs and scores GCSEs and distinguishes 9s from 8s. In addition the Scottish ones and Cardiff are harder if he is RUK.
Far more important is for your son to be clear on what is drawing him to dentistry, getting a great UCAT, A level predictions and achieve at least AAA (ideally A*AA) . WEX is ideally is dental, but customer facing is just as useful.
Just make sure he really, really understands the Uni course and career ahead- it's a 5 year very manual skills orientated training, with a full timetable, heavy workload and continuous exams.
Psychology is a great 3rd a level btw. Good luck to him.
