Hi @la3r

I hope you are well! There is no problem with not knowing what you want to do after your A-Levels and your gap year! I was the exact same and did not know what to do at all once I had left sixth form, so I decided to take a gap year aswell. My gap year allowed me the time to think about my next step and eventually I settled on university in Liverpool to study business management!

Do you have any plans for your gap year? I strongly recommend doing some travelling if you can. I went travelling and had the most amazing time and it prepared me a lot for uni in some ways making me more confident and outgoing! Travelling isn't the only option though as I am sure you know so whatever you get up to will be good fun!

Uni isn't something to rush, it is a big step and a decision that needs a lot of thinking. I didn't apply for uni until about January/February of the year that I started so you do have some time to think about it and weigh up your options! Have a think about what subjects you enjoy or have enjoyed over the years or if there is anything new that you would like to study! There is also this link, https://www.ucas.com/explore/search/apprenticeships?query=&refinementList%5BLevel.ApprenticeshipType%5D%5B0%5D=Degree%20Apprenticeship, which might help to start looking into degree apprenticeships and also if you head to the gov.uk website I believe they have an apprenticeship section which will be worth looking at!

I hope this response has helped slightly, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 😁

Hi, I also took French and STEM subjects at A-level and just completed a degree in International Relations and Arabic at SOAS.

Attending university Open Days really helped me make my decision. Many of these events include subject taster sessions, which can give you a better sense of what you might enjoy studying at the university level. It’s also a great opportunity to talk to current students and staff to see if the university atmosphere is right for you. Lots of universities host open days starting in early October and these are advertised on their websites.

If the dates don’t work for you, you can also sign up for a weekly campus tour to see the university atmosphere and ask questions to tour guides who are usually Student Ambassadors. Reading student experience blogs online is also a good option if you don't wan't to travel. E.g Blessing and good fortune: My experience studying Chinese at SOAS

I also found it helpful to talk to people working in fields I was considering. This gave me useful insight into day-to-day work in different sectors and helped me figure out where I might see myself in the future.

Here’s another useful link for finding apprenticeships: https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship. I’d also recommend setting up a meeting with your school's Career Advisor, they can usually provide more tailored resources and guidance.

I hope this helps, and good luck!
