Migrant Worker Application Upload of information

Hi
I applied for the migrant worker maintenance loan for 2025/2026, I have spoken with a number of very helpful people through the call centre and was advised that I had to upload evidence that I was in the UK on the 1st September 2023 (the first day of my course). I uploaded through the finance student portal a copy of my flight details / boarding card to confirm this and spoke with another person, last week who confirmed that all evidence had been received and I should receive notification last Friday...... I have not received any email or update on the Finance Portal - the person I spoke with said there were no other outstanding tasks...so I am not sure what to do. I have been awarded the tuition fee loan for the three years, but was made aware last year that I may be eligible under the Migrant Worker scheme as I am working part time and supporting myself financially. Any help / advice or suggestion please :-)

Hi there,

When did you upload the evidence? It's currently taking 17 working days to be processed currently. Our timescales are estimates and can change daily up or down depending on how busy we are. If the team need anything else they will email you, it may go to your junk folder.

Once updated and approved, this will reflect online and then you will receive paperwork in the post.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire
Thank you for coming back to me so quickly. I think it was around the 17th August. I have checked my junk folder and checked the email tab on Student Finance but have not received an email. I will keep checking. Niamh

Thank you. If you keep an eye on your account for an update shortly. The assessors may be doing what's called a 'Transfer of Ownership' changing your account for an EU to a Home Student (if you've previously been awarded tuition fees only).

If you haven't had an update by the start of next week then do contact us directly via telephone and we'll be able to confirm the transfer is in place and update you accordingly. Thanks, Jason

I’d really appreciate some advice about an email I received from Student Finance England yesterday regarding my application for migrant worker support.
I was told I needed to be in the UK for the first day of my course in 2023, which I was. I uploaded all the required documents and have spoken to several people on the Student Finance support line most recently this week who said things were looking positive (though they didn’t want to get my hopes up). However, I’ve now received an email saying I’m not entitled to migrant worker support because I don’t have three years of UK residency, and that I only qualify for the tuition fee loan.
I am at the point, where I am nearly just giving up on this application, the only reason I have kept up with it is a) financially it is extremely difficult to support yourself and do a FT course and work PT and this grant would make sure a huge difference and b) my friend from home, received this grant and she moved to the UK to do a two years masters and qualified? I’d like to raise a query or request a review but I’m not sure of the best way to do that whether I should contact them by email, phone, or send supporting documents again.

The email text was: Thank you for your recent call to our contact centre, I can confirm we havereviewed your application and unfortunately you are not entitled to migrantworker support as you do not have the 3 year residency in the UK .You are entitled to tuition fee loan support only.Yours sincerely,Student Finance England
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!

Hi there. Your best option would be to contact us directly so we can look into why the evidence you sent wasn't accepted. Just to clarify, the funding for masters and postgraduate studies is different from undergraduate, so it's not the same type of grant you would get, which is why there a difference's in the eligibility and what you can apply for.

If you contact us directly, we can take a look at why your evidence wasn't accepted. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah, thanks so much for your quick reply. Am I right in thinking that the application form for the Migrant Worker Grant is the same for both courses the PN1? Thanks Niamh

Yes, that's right - when applying as a Migrant Worker it's the PN1 form that you'll use (so long as you're an undergraduate).

Like Leah said, it would be best for you to contact us directly so we can check this.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme, I will contact the support line again, I have been given so much conflicting information, and today received an email from my college, saying that I owe another 285.00 as the Fees have gone up and the tuition loan doesn't cover it.... This is my final year, and I am determined to finish the course and become a qualified occupational therapist, but it has been absolutely financially draining, as well as physically draining - working and studying whilst living here, and I had been given a glimmer of hope with the option of the Migrant Worker grant. We're sorry you've not been able to get through to us yet. Can you instead call us now on 0300 100 0607 and select options 2, 5, then 1? That should get you through to an advisor who can help.

Thanks, Graeme
