Children’s nursing with a disability

Hi there, I’m about to start at Sheffield Hallam University and I was wondering if you are still allowed to do a children’s nursing course if you have motor and vocal tics, without coprolalia (swearing tics)? I haven’t told the university yet but I probably should. I’m just worried they’ll say I won’t be able to do the course or they’ll judge me before they’ve got to know me first. My tics are very mild and most days not noticeable. I haven’t got a Tourette’s diagnosis so there’s no diagnosis I would have to disclose other than that I’ve been experiencing symptoms and signs of Tourette’s but very mild now that I’m older.

I’d appreciate any help or suggestions.

Thank you very much! ❤️

You would probably need an occupational health assessment to support your placements. It is probably worth discussing early as adjustments could be made for you. It is better to be honest at the start than it being picked up in a clinical setting which could be uncomfortable for you and a patient. As a nurse you have to be honest and think about all your actions impacting on your patients, so it would be in your interest to discuss it with university before you start.

Thank you so much. Okay, so since I’m not worried about not being allowed to actually partake in the course anymore because my tics are only very mild, I shall tell occupational health. Thank you!
