uni accommodation dilemma

hellooo! i recently started my last year of high school meaning i will be starting my ucas application shortly. however, I am currently having a major dilemma because it looks like my mum isnt going to let me live in student accommodation. my mum has anxiety and has always kept me on a bit of a leash, me on the other hand I am dying for a bit of independence 😭 she is sticking to her guns that im not ready to live away from home as I have no life skills (life skills that she’s never bothered to freaking teach me) and it seems my other family members might agree with her on that. she wants me to commute but I feel like this will make me a bit of an outsider - my auntie was the one that suggested this, but now she’s gone and changed her mind when I thought she was going to back me up on this!! she said my cousin tried living in student accommodation and hated it because his flatmates drank constantly and now my mum is convinced that’s what’s going to happen to me. so my question to anyone who’s currently at uni - is there a way to pick your flatmates based on interests (ie. not wanting to drink and go out clubbing) and is private accom better than halls in this aspect? i will commute if I have to but if anyone has any way I can convince my mum then that would be amazing!! tia x

You can request things like an alcohol free floor or quiet halls stuff like that you'll need to chat to the residences team to see what they can offer.
