Is studying medicine in Bulgaria worth it? The case of Plovdiv Medical University

Attention to those planning to apply to Plovdiv Medical University, if it’s not too late, cancel your application.

Until this year, every tuition increase only affected first-year students. But now, the university has made a radical decision and increased the fees for all year groups. Some students are now facing thousands of euros in extra costs.

We were told there would be an open discussion about this and that any changes would follow that but the meeting happened today, and the vice rector scolded everyone, constantly interrupted speakers, and outright said that if we didn’t like it, we could get the hell out and transfer to another university. Yes, 5 days before school starts, we were told to leave if we don’t like it.

And the most ridiculous part? She compared Plovdiv Medical University’s tuition to Imperial College London and claimed the increase was “reasonable.” Yes, they’re seriously comparing themselves to Imperial College.

When asked if there would be further increases in future years, she said, “That’s not certain." So we’ll likely be paying Charles University (top 400 in the world) prices before we graduate.

Many students at this university literally pay bribes to pass their exams. The quality of education is extremely poor and yet they plan to increase tuition every year.

If you’re considering Plovdiv or even Bulgaria as an option, don’t.
