Hi everyone, this seems like a great way to connect with other prospective students at UoR! This is more of YOUR thread but if you have any questions feel free to reply and an ambassador will get in touch. You can follow us here on TSR if you are interested in Reading Uni but you don't have to and can always just search Uni Of Reading to find our latest uploads. We hope you enjoy connecting with other prospective students and thank you to the amazing TSR team for setting this up. 🙂

Hi everyone!

Let's start a thread about A-level subjects.

Drop in the threads which A-levels you're doing and what subject you are thinking of applying to at Reading,

You might find other students taking the same subjects / interested in the same course, and we can share tips, resources, and advice to help each other out!

I did Business, Psychology, Sociology & EPQ and now I'm doing LLB Law with international business!

You can find all our subjects here .

Hey everyone!

How are you all feeling? Is anyone applying for any courses with an early deadline (October 15th)? It’s a week to go, so just wanted to check in and see how you're feeling 😄

If you need some help with your personal statement, we have a whole forum dedicated to your questions (just don't post any part of your statement!), and some example statements in our PS library.

What are your main questions?

If you're not applying early, have you started looking around at booking any open days yet? If so, how are they going? Have you visited Reading yet?

Good luck everyone :woo:

Good afternoon,

It's great to hear you are applying to colleges.

At the University, there is a BA Film and Television course, a BA Art and Film course, a BA Creative Writing and Film & Theatre course, a BA English Literature and Film & Theatre course, and a BA Film & Theatre course. These all offer a diverse range of modules. For example, BA Film and Television offers a balanced foundation of foundational knowledge, including creation and theory of film. These are quite similar to media studies.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let us know.

All the best,
Ella

Hi there @shay.abd

It is great to hear that you are interested in studying Primary Education at Reading! 🙂

Don't worry if you can't make the November open day! There are more opportunities to visit such as the offer-holder days next year once applications are submitted. These also give you a great chance to meet lecturers, explore the campus and see the education facilities!

Commuting from London is also very doable! Reading does have excellent train links and many students commute. It is around 25 minutes to Paddington so is manageable! 🙂

You can also take a virtual campus tour to see what you think! This can be found here!

Best of luck and do let us know if you have any more questions!

All the best,
Millie 🙂

Hii! Thank you so much x I have a few questions about my chances with my personal statement as it leans more towards primary education however I want to also apply to the speech and language therapy course at the uni as it appeals me. I meet and above the grade requirements but I'm worried that due to my personal statement it will limit me. Do you have any answer or do you know anyone I could talk to x

Hi there,

Don’t worry about this at all!

With the new UCAS personal statement format, you’ll answer three main questions and this structure actually gives you the flexibility to link both interests together. Here are some top tips going through the questions you'll be asked:

Question 1: Why do you want to study this course or subject?
Focus on the underlying skills and motivations that connect both primary education and speech and language therapy and why you are choosing this for your subject / future career (what are your interests and ambitions in this sector?) for example, your passion for helping children communicate, supporting learning, or understanding child development.

Question 2: How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
Talk about how your studies have given you relevant knowledge and transferable skills. For example:

English Language or Psychology can show your interest in communication, behaviour, and language development.

Biology can demonstrate your understanding of the anatomy that is behind speech and hearing, so drawing in on the more science side

Health & Social Care (what I did my BTEC in) can highlight your awareness of learning processes and how children grow and communicate, have you done any coursework like this?

Even subjects like Drama or English Literature can show your creativity, communication skills, and ability to engage others.

Try to make links between what you’ve learned and how that knowledge prepares you for both primary education and speech and language therapy.

Question 3: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
This could include work experience, volunteering, reading, short courses, insight days, or independent research. Mention anything that demonstrates your commitment to working with children or supporting development and communication.

Meeting your grade requirements in the hardest step, so well done for this, even this demonstrates your commitment, understanding and capability before your personal statement is read!

The key is to show a consistent interest in helping others learn and communicate, that way, your statement/ question answers feels cohesive even if you’re applying to slightly different courses but be rest assured they both link well - its very common for students to apply for similar subjects - so you are not alone and universities totally understand, ill attach a helpful link to the UCAS information here, but if you need any more help don't hesitate to reply to this thread.

Sid

Hii! Thank you so much. I was wondering if University Of Reading for the Msci course accept separate personal statements like through email or something as i am worried as majority of my personal statement is based off on development and education and I don't want to single out speech and language therapy, would I be at a large disadvantage. I meet the academic requirements of the course.

Hi there no worries, we tend to only accept statements via the standard UCAS application to ensure fair standards for all applicants, please do feel free however to reach out to our admissions team via email, in some cases we can use extra supporting information but this would need to be approved prior. The fact you meet the requirements is great and we are used to seeing personal statements like yours is not a disadvantage from our point of view at all. Do let me know if you have any more questions - definitely drop them an email, if nothing else’s they should be able to add a note to your application internally to address the circumstances of yourselves applying for slightly varying subjects.
