Applying to 2 different undergraduate courses in same department at same uni

Posted that in Law but maybe better in applications? I'm new to this site!

My son wants to apply to undergraduate law (A*AA) and also law with French law (AAB) as his insurance at the same uni. He is told by his secondary school that you shouldn't apply to similar degrees at the same uni because you are very unlikely to get 2 offers for similar courses (in the same department) or you are most likely to get just 1 offer to the course that the uni has the hardest time to fill. Any actual concrete experiences of this in the past? Your views would be much appreciated before he makes his selection. Thank you

not sure about the school advice, but I guess it is depend on uni and how competitive the course is - no idea about law courses, sorry

FWIW my daughter applied to York for Biomed course and Cellular Biology, these were in same department - she got offers for both. She firmed at York for higher entry requirements Biomed course (and felt she had signalled a willingness to do the lower entry course if her grades didn't get her in). She insured at a different uni though, not sure about the wisdom of firm and insurance at the same uni

This is not entirely straightforward - that Uni may use collective 'Law subject group' target numbers or may they have separate target numbers for the Law and the Law/language course. If its an LNAT Uni they may also use different LNAT score thresholds for each course. They are unlikely to frown upon a dual application if there is a different 'offer chance' per course. The only way you will get definite answers to all of is by contacting that Uni's Admissions team and asking - or going to an Open Day and asking.
