just found out my 2nd year house to be is in a knifecrime/mugging hotspot

I'm due to move into my 2nd year uni house but I've just seen a video of someone walking down my road, talking about how unsafe that area is, how it's a mugging at knife point hotspot, that it's fine in the day but a total avoid at night.

I've no idea what to do. My confidence is shot - I'm absolutely terrified of walking alone there when it's dark. I've no reason to assume he's lying - it's not a video he would gain anything from lying about. It purely seems recollection-y.

My lectures start in a week and a half. I've got no idea what to do. I told my house groupchat about it, and someone replied with "what, this one 💀😂" with the video, so I don't think they're taking it seriously. Any suggestions of what to do?
Use your brain and analyse the media source. Who made this video? Why did they make it? What do they gain from making contentious claims online?

Yes, people do gain things from making contentious claims and lying in them. That's basically the entire business model for every tiktok "influencer" and youtuber with monetised content. That's not to say that it's necessarily wrong, but you should absolutely not believe some random video you see online.

You should verify the information independently by looking at e.g. crime statistics for the area published by the local police force and/or the ONS, look for news articles from reputable sources that corroborate that, and ask people who actually live there what they think.
There's a lot of crime everywhere now unfortunately and the world does feel increasingly unsafe especially for minorities and women.

Take sensible precautions and avoid walking alone at night or in the dark (keep some kind of torch on you if you absolutely have to).

Unfortunately safety isn't guaranteed anywhere though, my university accomodation block was broken into multiple times and there was quite a serious incident at least once (not in my house fortunately).

I agree with artful lounger, look at some crime statistics of the area rather than just one source.
