gateway course for vet med

hi guys,
I applied to the 5 year D100 course for veterinary medicine last year and received an offer from Nottingham. However, i did not meet my offer of AAB after receiving BBB on a level results day in Biology, chemistry and economics. I have been set on applying for the gateway course into vet med ever since but upon reading the entry requirements on the RVC it says that i must score 15 points on a supplementary form for mitigating circumstances. I know i will not meet these terms so does that mean i cannot apply to this course even though i meet the grade requirements? I don't know what to do from here - should i start looking at alternate degree courses that would put me onto an accelerated vet med course after i graduate? If so what would you recommend are the best undergraduate courses to get me onto the vet med accelerated course? I feel so disappointed if it is the case that i wont be able to have a successful application for the vet med gateway course by not meeting the extended circumstances. The idea of having to resit my a levels is the last thing i want to do as i found it extremely difficult to cope with the stress of a level exam season.
thanks guys,
izzy

hi Izzy,
Firstly I want to say that I’m proud of how well you’ve done and everything you’ve achieved so far, getting an offer from any vet school isn’t easy.
The first thing in your position that I would do is to check all the vet school grade requirements to see if you can apply to any with the grades you currently have. After that I would double check the requirements for gateway/foundation/access courses. Sometimes you may think you don’t qualify however I would double check (especially the address/area code ones).
If you are still in a position where you’re not eligible for any of the courses with your current grades I would then suggest thinking about retaking your a levels or taking a uni course.
The main thing to consider if you choose to get a degree before taking a veterinary medicine degree is that you will only get tuition loans for your first degree not the second degree. This would mean you would have to fund 4 possibly 5 years of university yourself. For this reason it may be worth considering retaking your a-levels.
As someone who received four rejections for vet school and missed their target grades I can understand some of the feelings you’re going through. I have now completed the gateway year at the RVC, it may not have been the route that I had planned but I wouldn’t change anything as I feel it will only made me a better vet.
If you have any questions or want any clarification don’t hesitate to ask.
Best of luck with your journey!

Hi Izzy, it’s not only the Rvc that offer gateway programes. And the other vet schools that offer gateway arent as ‘strict’ with the mitigating circumstances. To mind: Bristol, Nottingham, uclan and Surrey all do gateway/foundation.

Hey, I am sorry for the late response. You may have already taken it by now. My experience in the whole Nottingham application process was a lot better than the others. I found for the SJT its good to do medical school practice paper situational judgement tests. Even though some of the situations are different the ethics and protocols are exactly the same and i felt it was pretty similar to the medical school ones id practiced. For the interview, id recommend subscribing to loads of vet med news sites and know your stuff about a few basic animal diseases. mind map what you learnt about your work experiences and know how to link it to basic vet skills. I thought it was quite useful to know about 'One Health' and how animal diseases link to human diseases and contagion. The staff who interview are really bubbly and enthusiastic which put me totally at ease in comparison to my other interviews. Goodluck!
