Moving van?

Hi,

I was meant to move from London to York for uni today but I still haven't sorted out a moving van etc. unfortunately, no one I know drives so I'll have no choice but to use a moving van. Does anyone have an experience with using a moving van to move stuff to uni and if so, does anyone have an recommendations? I was looking at Anyvan but I'm unsure

How much stuff are you taking? Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to make a few journeys with two suitcases over the next couple of weekends? No-one I've ever heard of needs a van to move their stuff to uni.

It's a long journey - two hours each way and tickets cost £50-60. I obviously have my clothes and kitchen stuff to bring up which are essential, but those two would have to be two separate trips, unless I bring two suitcases which is a bit tricky as luggage space isn't exactly abundant on these trains. I also have my bike, and some books etc. etc. I suppose I'll consider a few trips on the train.

Hello there! We are literally in the same situation. I just moved to uni this Monday by van. I was going by train but because of my mum's mobility problems and the fact it seemed like a total nightmare we hired "man and van" though we realised after booking them it would have been cheaper to hire someone without a third party but there you go, that's life!
Check the weight limit/if they want a inventory as if you go over it they will charge you extra, same if you get stuck in traffic longer then the amount you hire them for.
If you aren't hiring them to move your stuff make sure it is quick and easy to move............Time is money! With the people that I went with if you wanted longer then 15min at each end you had to spend more money.

Thank you so much.... I was starting to feel a bit silly for requiring a moving van. It's just gonna be too much of a nightmare to move everything up by train. I believe I'll only have a suitcase, large box, and at most two medium boxes so it shouldn't cost TOO much. Just a bit too much to bring up by train 😊

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost and from where did you move from/ to which uni/ city?

No problem! I spend ages worrying about what I was going to do.
I think it was about £200? Which does seem like a lot but we got a good size van and was over all by far the easiest way to do it all. It meant I could bring more stuff then I was planning to and not worry about buying it at the other end as where I am right now the are really not many homeware shops. Also for some reason it was cheaper for us to hire van then a taxi? (which was the first plan)
I moved from Stafford to Liverpool (so about a hour/ hour and a half by car)

........................Also tip for when you need to move out if you can't/don't want to continue staying were you are moving to, see if you can hire a storage unit if you don't want the bother of taking all your stuff home to just bring it all back again after the summer.

National Express - from £18 one way.

Nah, that's a 6 hour trip. Don't be silly now. Back and forth would be a grand total of 12 hours. I've resolved to use a moving van anyway.

Hopefully you’ve settled in by now and figured out the moving chaos. If there’s one thing I wish I’d done sooner after my move, it’s sorting out what actually fits my new space and what doesn’t. Keeping a couple of boxes in short-term storage for a bit helped me decide what was worth keeping without living in clutter straight away.
