university accommodation

I got allocated private accommodation probably because of the university having too many applicants and I had to get a studio as it had no shared accom left. Th studio doesn't have an oven or toaster or kettle, just a hob, microwave and mini fridge and freezer. I tried to use the microwave and it started smoking after 20 seconds, I thought the fire alarm was gonna go off. I need to buy my own toaster and everything and the fridge makes a loud humming noise all the time that bothers me when I sleep. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic but this isn't what I expected and if I had shared accom, at least we'd be able to kind of laugh about it together...

Hiya! (:

I would reccomend chatting to the accommodation team, especially about the appliances that may not be safe/working properly!! - they will be used to this type of thing and hopefully be able to assist in fixing or getting new stuff (: - with my first accom our microwave started smoking and failed its safety checks and the accom was responsible for this since none of us were at fault and we got it replaced fairly quick!

When i moved in, we also didnt have a kettle or toaster 🥲 - during freshers theres sometimes events where people are selling their old accom stuff like this, would be worth going to these and seeing as usually you can get it for fairly cheap 😊 - if you were expecting a kettle/toaster etc though and the accom had mentioned it would be provided - definitly worth letting them know its missing as they will be able to provide (:

also to try make it feel a little less lonely, depends on the accom but if theres any public kinda hangout places definetly worth heading and seeing if you can meet some people there, likely a lot of people are feeling similar, especially with moving and will be happy to have a chat! 🤗

hope this helps, goodluck with the start of uni!!

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear you've had a difficult experience in your private accommodation so far.

I would recommend contacting the general manager/general technician/resident services in your halls to dicuss both the microwave and the fridge - they may need replacing or they may just need a quick settings adjustment. I recently had an issue with my fridge (wasn't maintaining the correct temperature) and the general manager had it replaced within two days of our discussion. Your microwave may have an oven feature - make sure to Google the model to find the manual.

It's normal to feel a bit lonely when you move into a new place, but try not to let it get you down. Chat with your neighbours or hang out in any available social spaces in the accommodation to try and build some more connections. 🙂

Best of luck!

Hi, I am sorry to hear your feeling this way and it's not what you expected. I would definitely reach out to the accommodation team to let them know about your appliances not working and especially the microwave as this is a major fire hazard and needs to be sorted asap. Hopefully they can get you new appliances rather than you having to buy them yourself. I hope everything works out for you!
