International relations

I was recently recommended to look into a degree in International Relations, my predicted grades are A*BC in History, Biology and Chemistry, with a pending EPQ. I was wondering for anyone studying or going to study International Relations. What is the Career prospects like? Job security, salary, what type of work would I do? Anyone advice is appreciated and welcome. Many thanks

Hi! I'm in Y13 & looking to do politics and international relations at either Warwick or Bristol next year - I would say that international relations obviously does not have a direct career path so the salary can really vary, this especially means that the quality of the uni ect you go too matter quite a lot, its not like medicine where you can simply be a junior doctor in the nhs after leaving medical school, but it also means you can choose from a variety, job security will be strong if you decide to enter the civil service and it will have a great pension scheme however other careers may be less stable; for civil service jobs look on the internet ect but you could get into international security ect I met a lot of current students at Warwick open day who were planning to enter that line of work!

Hi, I've just graduated with a degree in International Relations and Arabic from SOAS, so if you have any course-related questions, feel free to ask!

An IR degree can help you build a deep understanding and knowledge of the complex political and cultural issues of our time and transferable skills that are valued by different industries. Recent SOAS graduates from the department have been hired in fields such as international development, humanitarian aid, media, consultancy, NGOs, charities, policy institutes and more! Companies include the United Nations, BBC World Service, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Financial Times, Save the Children and Eversheds LLP.

During university, I interned in the civil service, in tax at a big 4 firm, and did journalism work experience during my year abroad. I'm currently applying for masters programmes and hoping to work in sustainability or policy afterwards. I'd say that the career prospects are broad but would recommend keeping an open mind and proactively applying to different opportunities throughout university to find what suits you best!
