Common questions and top tips for University!

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share some of the most common questions I get about starting university. This is based on my personal experience so I hope it can offer you some guidance. 😊

Making Friends 🫂
University is the perfect place to find life-long friends. I highly recommend putting yourself out there if you want to make connections, as there are so many people in the same boat.

Before heading on to campus, I recommend joining your universities official Facebook groups. This way you can start communicating with others on the same course, or in the same accommodation.

My top recommendation for making friends is to head on your universities student union website and check out the various societies available, if possible I also recommend attending the societies fair. Societies are an excellent place to meet people, as the common topic is a great ice breaker and everyone is there for the same purpose of making friends. Whether you focus on a current hobby, or try something new, or start your own society, I'm sure there is something for you!

Moving in 🚚
When it comes to moving in, tips can vary depending on your situation.

If you can only carry the minimal amount, try to focus on items you will not be able to easily buy when you are there, or essentials for your first few days. This could include items like a laptop or clothes. You could then go and buy kitchen items, bedding and more from local stores.

If you can bring a bit more, I recommend trying to follow this UCAS list of everything you should try to have at your accommodation.

When it comes to buying items, try looking second hand. This could be in charity shops, vinted, Facebook marketplace, etc. This will be excellent for cost saving.

How to cope with anxiety 💡
Whether you are moving onto campus or travelling in, anxiety is completely normal as you are stepping into the next chapter of your education.

Here are some simple ways I reduced anxiety:
- Called or Facetimed my family often.
- Scheduled regular visits home so I wasn't uncertain of when I would next return.
- Budgeted to reduce financial anxiety. I recommend researching into budget plans to help your organisation of your finances. Also getting a part-time job can hugely relive this stress.
- Used the welcome week to become familiar with the campus. Additionally, if your university uses the app "Maze maps" it can massively help for campus navigation. For further information on how to reduce anxiety, I recommend checking out this article.

What I wish I knew 🗣
Before attending university, I wish I knew how easy it was to make connections if I allowed myself to. Making friends is a common area of worry for new students, but many universities make it easier than ever to connect with your peers. So try not to let this be an element of stress for you, as classes, societies, events, part-time jobs and more offer many opportunities to connect.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)
