does it really matter if i’m friends with my uni flatmates

I just started Uni and my flatmates have somehow become acquainted (i’m guessing it was at night yesterday cuz i didn’t see them at all during the day).

To me they seem like night people which is the opposite of what i am i’m more of an early riser they also do drink which again is the opposite of what i am as i don’t drink. i’m worried that they will see me as a weird guy that doesnt hang out with them should i change or something i’m really clueless

I mean, you're different types of people and that's fine, you shouldn't change just to fit in with your flatmates. As long as things are cordial in the flat there's no issue, they'll do them and you'll do you with other people outside of your flatmates.

Hi there,

This is completely normal. Before starting uni, there’s often an expectation that you’ll become best friends with your flatmates and do everything together, but that’s not always how it works out. I’ve lived in four different halls and each one was different, and I’ve never had it where all my flatmates were close friends.

As long as everyone gets along, pulls their weight with chores, and keeps things reasonably clean, then that’s a win. You’ll naturally meet people through your course, societies, and maybe a part-time job too, so your flatmates don’t need to be your main group of friends. Living with others is always a bit of a lottery, and it’s completely fine if you don’t share the same lifestyle as them.
