Uni accommodation and hair straighteners

I am worried that my straighteners will set of uni accommodation fire alarms as I heard the alarms can be quite sensitive? I also found out the window doesn't really open wide enough.

Any advice.

Hi,

Most straighteners shouldn’t set off fire alarms if used normally, but accommodation alarms can be sensitive, so it’s good to be cautious. Try to use them away from smoke detectors and maybe put a small fan on to help with any heat/steam. Since the window doesn’t open much, just make sure the room is ventilated as best you can.

Hope this helps,

Hopefully not but stay calm and follow the usual fire alarm procedures. It’s also a good idea to check your accommodation rules about appliances.

Hi there,

They shouldn't set the fire alarms off so I wouldn't worry too much about this. I used my straighteners all the time while in halls and it was always fine. I would just recommend making sure you are familiar with the procedure if the fire alarm just goes off, although it is unlikely to be caused by hair straighteners.

I know this is a random tip and you probably aren't looking to buy any more, but I bought some which automatically go off after 15 minutes of use so that I would always have peace of mind that they would be off if I was out to save me worrying about whether I left them on! As I said, you may have some already but if you are looking to buy any this has been great for me to stop me worrying!

I hope some of this helps,

Hello,

Hair straighteners usually do not set the fire alarms. Although there are instances of hair dryers setting them off (sometimes) because of the alarm’s sensitivity. Just make sure you are not using the heating machine right under the fire alarm.

Hi @Anonymous 👋

Thats a very common worry everyone has! You should be fine though just try not to use too much heat to make obvious smoke. Opening the window only a little bit can still make a difference so try that and hair straighteners can set off alarms but its a low chance of it happening 🙂
