UK student visa

We are Canadian citizens living in Dubai and have been in and out of the UK umpteen times. We applied for my son’s student visa on the 14th of August and his biometrics were done on the 18th.
We got an email on the 4th of September saying it will take longer and that they will let us know if they need any further documents. They haven’t asked for anything further but we haven’t heard anything back either. His classes have already started September 8th.
Does anyone have any experience with this? How much longer can this potentially take ?

They need to be aware about this delay - both is terms of the turn-around for a visa and an obvious 'failure', and the practicalities of your son starting late.
If the uni has a visa / international team they may have a contact within UKVI who can advise them what the status and ETA is.

As above, you need to keep the uni advised at every stage in any case, or they will just assume that your son is not joining them.
