Buses in York - over charging . . . ?

My daughter has started Freshers week and has just found out she is being charged £6 for each day using the bus

- basically she has been walking to places (eg City, Aldi etc) and getting bus back to campus (with swipe on, swipe off) to save a few quid, but seems to be being charged way more. Because its contactless payment she didn't realise the cost

Any suggestions? I wondered if the App was a better way of doing things

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear that it sounds like your daughter has been over paying for the buses. According to the First Bus website and app, a student single (only usable on the University buses: U1, U2, U3 and U4) costs just £1.50, with a day ticket costing £4.50 - so £6 a day sounds like she's paying over the odds, unless she's travelling on buses that are not the U1, U2, U3 or U4. We do have a £3 cap on tickets, so it sounds like she's been paying the maximum for each ticket, I'm not sure why / how that's happened, but I'm really sorry to hear it.

When I was a student in 2022, I used the First bus app exclusively for buying bus tickets as I could buy them in advance and keep a better track of what I was spending on bus travel. It sounds like the app will be a good way for your daughter to avoid being overcharged, as well as monitoring her spending, so I'd definitely recommend this. You can also buy a pack of 10 student-single-tickets for £14, which reduces the single ticket cost to £1.40.

She can download the app on the Apple app store or on Google Play.

I hope this helps! Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Hannah 😀
I think with tap on/off payments, it usually resolves at the end of the week/month to make sure you pay the lowest fee for the number of trips you took? Might be worth checking the FAQ on the bus company website.

I don’t know how this resolves with student tickets though, for those I imagine she has to buy a ticket on the app.

Not in York but I've had this problem too with First buses across the UK that use tap on tap off. Even when I tap off it often charges me the full single which can be like £5.60

I also reccomend getting tickets on the app, that seems to be the only way I avoid this problem

I'm not sure about first, but with other buses like arriva, ask for a "student" ticket or go onto an app rather than tap on tap off, as that will charge adult prices
