How to get national insurance number

Hi, I applied for student finance and my application has been approved. However I do not have a national insurance number - when I try and apply for one, the website says that if you need a national insurance number for student finance, you can’t get it from here and that student finance England will contact you. However I haven’t got anything on this yet.

Hi there,

When did you make your application? What status does it show online in your account? Can you confirm your nationality?

Thanks,
Claire

Made my application around a week ago. My application is ‘approved’ but under actions to complete it says enter your national insurance number - incomplete. I am a UK national ie a home student.

Hi there. If you don't have an NI number you will need to apply for one before we will be able to make any payment. This is on the GOV. UK website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number/how-to-apply

Thanks, Leah.

This is the part I get stuck at with the application. Since I haven't worked before and not looking for work currently, it doesn't let me continue with the application.

Hi there,

When your application is approved, we will send your details to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for validation. This normally takes a week Wednesday to Wednesday after your application is approved. If the DWP are unable to verify a student, they will contact them (by SMS or letter) and advise to apply for NINO through the DWPs new online service (https://www.apply-national-insurance-number.service.gov.uk/student-loan).

The text message will contain the below details:

DWP SMS You recently applied for a UK student loan. To get your student loan you need a National Insurance number. You will get a letter from the Student Loans Company in the next 7 days confirming this. Please click the link below to apply for a National Insurance number:
https://www.apply-national-insurance-number.service.gov.uk/student-loan Complete your application as soon as possible. Do not share this link with anyone. If you cannot apply online, please call 0800 141 2079 or use the textphone number 0800 141 2438.

When we've been notified that an SMS or letter has been sent, we'll issue our own letter asking for your new NINO. Once you have this, you can provide evidence of this so we can then update and unblock your payments.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi, I applied for a national insurance number and just received it via the post. However, after entering it on the student finance website it gives me the following message: There's a problem with the National Insurance number you've entered - You've entered a National Insurance number that matches one we already have on our system.

There's an option to upload evidence but then no space to actually upload it, so I'm confused what to do now. Many thanks for your help

Hi there, I have provided a link to show how to upload evidence (if required)

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/student-finance-england-how-to-guide

If however you are unable to upload this evidence then we would require a copy of this to be posted to us instead, evidence can be posted to:

Bank Mail Team
Student Loans Company
11 Carnegie Road
Hillington Park
G52 4JT

Once received, this is currently taking 5 working for review.
