Compelling personal reason

I am mature student who is looking to return to University, unfortunately my first year was curtailed due to personal reasons and I was additional consideration because of bereavement, my father in law had a short battle with liver cancer over the winter months and passed in February. The situation was made more difficult as my mother in law struggles with her health and we believe possibly early stages of dementia so my wife and I with our young family have been supporting over these difficult months.

I understand and was unaware of the possibility of applying for Compelling personal reasons and wondered whether this maybe a consideration for being offered the year back, I am due to enrol at the end of September and unsure whether I missed the opportunity to apply with waiting time for a response from Student Finance, does anyone have any advice or experience similar circumstances?

Thank you

Hi there. How many years of previous study do you have in total? What is the name of the new course you will be studying and how many years will this new course be? Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,

Thank you for contacting me.

It's all a bit of a mess really, one thing after to another, I was meant to be enrolling and starting back a University of Brighton on the 29th September, it's looking more unlikely, so I try to explain briefly, I am a mature and disabled student, last September I had my dream opportunity to be accepted at Brighton, the degree being Accounting and Finance (N420), after a couple of weeks felt out of depth, but now realise looking back just got the jitters, so though my experience of thirty years in accountancy decided to opt for the Accounting and Finance Integrated Year N42Y, this then unfortunately was curtailed soon after due to my father in law becoming seriously ill after a short battle in the Spring he passed away with liver cancer, my mother in law we think has early stages dementia, so its been challenging with a young family coupled with my disabilities. On a brighter note I decided to return to University this September, and contacted my previous course leader, he felt I was more than capable of being on the Accounting and Finance Degree N420 course, so I over the last month had to upload a change of circumstance for my course back to Accounting and Finance, this presently still needs to be updated, I sent this on Saturday the 30th August, so hopefully this will be updated. I had unfortunately not considered and wasn't aware that I maybe able ask and request for compelling personal reasons to be able to have the originally year back, the course is three years, however I worry with complex disabilities challenges with mental health and diabetes whether I need the additional year and feel worried about starting the course, having seen this would take a month to review means I would be past the cooling off period at university so feel I have run out of time and will have to wait another year, which will impact also my disability learning allowance so very frustating and disappointing not sure what to do.

Apologies for the long message.

Best wishes

Kevin

If you have only studied 1 year previously, then you have enough funding for the length of the new course.

Are you asking specifically about getting the additional year back in case you have to repeat a year on the new course? Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,

Yes, I understand that the lengthen of funding for Student Finance would be three year's with a gifted year, I am just worried and concerned should there be any hiccups or further struggles I would be unable to finish the course.

I have written a letter and will upload to my account for review however worry that I won't have a response for at least a month and my enrolment is the 29th September.

Thank you and much appreciated.

Hi there,

Once we receive evidence its currently taking 17 working days to be reviewed. Our timescales are estimates and can change daily up or down depending on how busy we are. If the team need anything else they will email you, it may go to your junk folder.

The team will review and contact you to advise if the evidence has been accepted or not. As Leah mentioned above if you have only done 1 year previous study, then you should be fine for finance for a new course.

Thanks,
Claire
