Durham University Gowns

Hiya, I am an undergraduate starting Durham University this year - specifically staying in University College, and I was wondering when to buy my gown and when am I supposed to wear it? Any advice would be appreciated as I am scared I will forget to wear/buy one and be told off by the University College staff 😭

I’m pretty sure this is where I’ve ordered mine from, they also have some links on their Instagram page (:

I think we wear there for matriculation, formal dinners, and graduation (this might be a different gown I’m not sure)

Hey, congrats on starting at Castle! 🎉 Don’t worry at all about the gown at the moment, you don’t need to rush to buy one before you arrive. The college will let you know how and when to get it, usually during Freshers’ Week. Lots of students are in the same boat, and the process is really straightforward.

At Castle, you’ll mainly wear your gown for formal dinners and some special college events (not for everyday lectures or classes), so you won’t be expected to turn up in one right away. You definitely won’t get told off.

You’ll be guided through it once you’re there, and you won’t miss out. You’ll have plenty of reminders and support. 😊
