Hi IbI09,
Yes! Ultimately your student maintain loan is there to help you with living expenses, but you can use it on whatever you like. However, please don’t make the mistake that many students do and spend all your loan in the first month.
Budgeting your money at university is essential to avoid financial stress and make your money last. With student loans, rent, food, travel, and social events, it’s easy to overspend without realising. A clear budget helps you track what you have, what you need to spend, and what you can save. It also helps you prioritise essentials and avoid unnecessary debt.
If you do find yourself struggling with budgeting I would recommend contacting your university’s financial advice team. At LJMU we have money advice staff and a hardship fund which we can access to help with budgeting/cost of living. I imagine other universities may have similar things.
All the best and enjoy freshers!
Tilly
