Sports societys with no sports experience

Is it weird to join sports societies with no experience in the sport

For example i want to join cheer society but the anxiety is eating me up. Is it embarassing to sign up for a sport ive never even touched. Is cheer tryouts humiliating? Will i completely embarass myself. I really want to come out of my shell and dont want to regret not trying i js dont want to embarass myself and be jusged

I didn’t join any sports societies but I can’t see why it’d be weird joining with no experience. The one’s at my university let me join (if I wanted to) despite not having experience.

It’s probably worth checking with your university.

At the Freshers Fair - or whatever its called at your Uni - all the clubs/societies/sports will have a stand and have reps there clamouring to get you to sign up, and will be happy to tell you what experience, if any, you actually need for any activity.

Hey there @Bloppbloopbloop!

To answer your question, it is not weird at all to join sports societies with no experience! Sport societies are actually there to give you that experience. Most sport societies in Uni give you the option to either participate recreationally or competitively and so it is up to you to make that choice. The anxiety is absolutely normal when considering doing something new, so do not beat yourself up over it. But I would highly recommend you give it a go if you feel as though it is something you would be interested in. Plus, it would be a great way to make new friends!

Hi there!

There is nothing wrong with joining societies with no experience! They are there to have fun and often so you can try something new so there is definitely nothing wrong with this.

A lot of sports societies usually have a couple of teams and sometimes a social team too. So there will often be a few competitive teams - so at Hallam there are a few different cheer teams and then a social team where it is more just for fun and to learn new things rather than it being super competitive. I also thin they often put you in groups in your trials based on how much experience you have, is you wont be trying out next to people who have loads of experience, but this might differ at different universities.

Don't let worrying about your lack of experience stop you from trying out! There will be loads of people in the same boat as you so don't worry at all.

I hope this helps,
