Work experience for year 12

I'd like to do a work experience placement in marine sciences, microbiology or biochemistry but I have no idea where to look. If anyone knows any good placements maybe in the south-west / Plymouth area that would be great, thanks.

Not sure if they do work placement, but you could try and contact the National Marine Aquarium?

Hi @AstonR,

I hope you are well! Does your sixth form or college have a careers team? If so I would highly recommend booking an appointment to speak to them as they will definitely be able to point you in the right direction. I remember when I was looking for work experience in year 12 I had no idea where to even start like you have mentioned however, when I spoke to the careers advisor, they were able to provide me with some information and websites to look and also phone numbers for the places that I had shown some interest in!

A work experience placement in the subjects you have mentioned does sound very interesting! Although I can imagine it is quite competitive but I am sure a quick chat with the careers team though will help you a lot and you will be able to sort something!

Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hi AstonR, great to hear you're keen to find a biological placement! What is it you're hoping to do in the future? I'm a current Zoology student at the University of Plymouth so if you have any questions about anything related, feel free to let me know 🙂

A few organisations that might be of interest and worth contacting: the National Marine Aquarium (try contacting their seagrass laboratory with Blue Meadows if that interests you), the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Often times, placements or opportunities aren't advertised and it can be down to you to contact the organisation and register your interest, highlighting your current experience, and why you want to gain more from a placement, plus what you could offer them as a student. I've found this to be an ideal way to carve opportunities for yourself so try giving a few places you have researched an email.

Best of luck! 🌟
