Day in the life of a Law Student

Day in the life of a law student

Hey! I’m Ru and I’m studying Law at Birmingham City University. Being a Law Student is a journey that blends academic challenge with real-world experience and a lively student community. With a mixture of long hours in the library, challenging debates in seminar and moments of laughter with friends: no two days are the same, making the journey worthwhile. Below is a glimpse into what life is like as a law student at BCU.

My mornings tend to start in Curzon Building, the hub of the Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences. You find that the lecture theatres are always buzzing with energy, whether I am attending a Business Law lecture or diving into Criminal Law. What I love about being a law student at BCU is that the teaching does not just stay in theory, our lecturers manage to bring cases to life by making seminars and lectures interactive and by incorporating current events and real legal practice. Every lecture is practical and engaging. We often debate case judgements, or legislation and these discussions really help sharpen my reasoning and confidence in speaking.

In between classes, I enjoy my free time on campus. The many cafes available at BCU make it a great spot to catch up with friends over coffee, with conversations usually ranging from assignment stress to career aspirations.

Lectures are for an hour and seminars being held for two hours. A typical day means a lecture then a seminar or two lectures then freedom (all depending on your timetable of course). After lectures and seminars, I often head to the library in Curzon for independent study. There is always reading to do, case law, journals, and post-seminar work. But trust me, it is way more exciting than it sounds! The library offers a variety of options allowing you to fully do the research required.

I am also involved with activities outside of lectures. And some days I dedicate time to practical experiences, like volunteering at Birmingham City University’s law clinic where I have witnessed how legal knowledge can change people’s lives; all while working with a solicitor. These opportunities give me a chance to apply my skills beyond the classroom and connect with both peers and professionals.

I often use my evenings to wind down. BCU’s city-centre location means I am never too far from experiencing the vibrant Birmingham lifestyle. Ranging from student union events to simply relaxing after a day of lectures, reading and volunteering.

Though being a law student can be demanding, it is also extremely fulfilling. Being a BCU law student specifically has allowed me to experience a combination of academic depth, hands-on opportunities, and a supportive community preparing me for the legal career I aspire to venture into.
