Hi! I can help 🙂 I am starting y2 of adult nursing and I have 2 children that are 6 and 9. I did a health and social care access course too so somewhat similar to your path. The access course will prepare you really well for uni life. It is hard, make no mistake, your family life will take a bit of a hit but it’s only for one year. The uni course in comparison will feel easier in the sense that the workload will be far less than the access course (assignment wise). So if you make it through your access course you will make it through 1st year at uni. As far as placements, some are really flexible, others less so, uni has very little say on placements hours. I will say that making my hours has been the hardest part of uni for me so far. That is in part due to the fact that I don’t drive and live in a rural area where public transportation leaves a lot to be desired. There won’t be many placements that will allow for school pick ups though. They may let you finish early but the compounding effect of this will greatly impact your accumulated 2,300 hours by 3rd year. I missed an hour of work most days(due to public transport) and had 2 sick days over my placements this year and I’m over 100 hours down as a result. Placement hours are typically 8-6 or 12 hour shifts like 7-7, if you get an acute placement and do nights that won’t impact school pick up but you won’t be able to do that for the full 3 years so now is the time to start planning childcare. The good thing is, you only have placement in blocks. That makes childcare provision a little easier in a way because you only need it for set blocks of time although, I think in your case with a 2 year old it might be more complex. I know my friend who has children that age has to organise the days she wants them looked after well before the year starts, so start discussing this with nursery’s now, so you’re not caught out when the time comes. Best of luck, yo got this! Any questions feel free to pm me 🙂
