Hello, I'm looking to apply for the 2026 intake in Modern Languages or Translation for Japanese, I am thinking about applying to Cardiff and maybe somewhere else. I was just wondering how competitive are they to join? Or perhaps what is it like? Any further imformation would be helpful! Thanks.

Modern language courses don't tend to be competitive so you should be fine if you meet the entry requirements.

Hello everyone,

If you’re applying to the University of Chester, this year, there’s an Applicant Day coming up on January 24 th. I’ve found loads of information on the university’s website and a booking link. It sounds a really useful day with a lot of information events planned

It will vary by uni but modern languages isn't a particularly competitive course so a near-miss might get you in. Don't bank on it though and keep studying.

I've applied to study modern languages and linguistics at Southampton, Warwick and Cardiff.
For Warwick and Southampton, I chose Spanish (post-alevel) and German (ab-initio), at Cardiff only Spanish.
I also applied to english language and linguistics at Swansea and Sussex but I really want to study a modern language so I'm deciding between the other 3 atm. I've got 4 offers 🙃, only Warwick hasn't got back to me yet.
