Chronicles of Shobs- first year law student edition :)

Hey guys, guess who's back for another year of semi consistent GYG posts?

I’m Shobs, just starting my first year studying Law at KCL and living in Julian Markham House. If you’ve got any questions about the course, first year life, or accommodation, feel free to ask.

A little about me: I studied Maths, Politics and Psychology at A Level (ABB) and applied to Oxford, KCL, Warwick, Southampton and Leicester. I got four offers plus an interview at Oxford, and I scored 28/42 in the LNAT, so I’m happy to share advice on applications, personal statements, or the test.

Modules this year:

Criminal Law (Tutorials: Tuesdays 12-1pm; Lectures: Wednesdays 11-1pm)

European Law (Tutorials: Thursdays 12-1pm; Lectures: Thursdays 9-11am)

Public Law (Tutorials: Tuesdays 2-3pm; Lectures: Tuesdays 9-11am)

Elements of the Law of Contract (Tutorials: Thursdays 3-4pm; Lectures: Mondays 9-11am)

Legal Reasoning (first semester) Fridays 1-2pm

Outside of uni, I’m hoping to finally finish my Grade 8 piano before the syllabus runs out in 2025, and I recently started Tamil school on Saturdays to learn the language properly and connect more with my culture. When I’m not doing that, you’ll probably find me bingeing The Rookie or a good crime doc, drawing, or yapping with friends on Discord.

Goals for the year:

Join the Women’s Football Team & train weekly for fitness and wellbeing

Aim for a First without burnout by using office hours and support—working towards the Transnational Legal Studies LLM pathway at Georgetown/ Year at the CTLS in London

Be more honest about my mental health instead of bottling things up

Take every opportunity (societies, networking, internships, jobs) to build experience for Vac Schemes & Training Contracts

I move into accommodation tomorrow and Fresher’s is coming up, so updates might be slow at first-but here’s to a consistent & amazing year ahead for all of us!

Best of luck with this year, looking forward to following along!

Hey guys, guess who's back for another year of semi consistent GYG posts?
If you didn't see my GYG last year then let me just reintroduce myself and if you remember me then welcome back and I hope we're all doing better than ever before!
I'm Shobs- I'm entering my first year as a Law student at KCL and I'll be staying in Julian Markham House this year so if you have any questions about KCL/ what being a first year law student is like/ about my accomm then feel free to ask!
A bit of background to me- I studied Maths, Politics & Psychology for A Levels and I achieved ABB in them over summer. I originally created my first ever GYG just after the new year this year as I realised I wanted to take some more accountability with the amount of work/ revision I was actually doing and also just so I had somewhere to keep my thoughts and tasks organised. I applied to Oxford, KCL, Warwick, Southampton & Leicester all to study Law and I received offers from 4/5 of my universities & an interview from Hertford College at Oxford. I also achieved a 28/42 in the LNAT so if any of you in Year 12/13 or whatever year you may be in want some advice on the LNAT/ personal statement/ anything university related or law related then feel free to ask my questions on that too
I'll be studying four modules this year: Criminal Law, European Law, Public Law & Elements of the Law of Contract. Additionally for my first semester, my university also had a module called Legal Reasoning that we also have to take.
Outside of my studies, I am hoping to get my Grade 8 music exam done for the Piano by the end of 2025 (otherwise I am a bit screwed because the syllabus expires at the end of this year....) and I have also started going to Tamil School on Saturdays recently (I never went when I was younger and it has always been a dream of mine to read, write & speak Tamil properly and reconnect with my culture/ heritage & extended family who still live back home in Sri Lanka.)
Outside of all of that though, you will find me binging The Rookie/ any good series (I do love me some crime documentaries too) or drawing or just out and about socialising with my friends or on a discord call yapping away.
My goals for this academic year (will review these at some sort of regular interval throughout the year to see where I am with them):
- Join the Women's Football Team and try to go to training every week (just so I know I have some sort of exercise consistently going on to help maintain good wellbeing & mental health)
- Try and do my very best to get a First in my exams at the end of the year without burning myself out/ mentally draining myself- I want to make the most out of my Professors' office hours so I hope to be going to them consistently if I'm not understanding anything/ want to enhance my knowledge further/ just want their advice on how they would answer past paper questions, etc. My main goal for wanting good grade for first year if because I am thinking about applying for
Kings' Law LLB with Transnational Legal Studies LLM pathway. That's where I spend a semester abroad at Georgetown and then a semester at Georgetown's Centre for Transnational Legal Studies in London in between my 2nd & 3rd year
- Try and be more accepting of the fact that it is okay to just not be okay at times but what isn't okay is to pretend I'm fine and then let it all come crashing down at important moments- I found myself doing that a lot during Year 13 and I went through quite a lot of rough patches that I wouldn't have found myself in if I had just been more honest with myself and reached out for help from my friends/ family/ school counsellor when I needed to.
- Try and take advantage of every opportunity that arises- whether that's from making new friends/ joining new societies/ networking and making connections with people outside of the legal sector/ getting a job/ finding internship opportunities that align with my goals & interests. I just want to make the most of all the opportunities possible and ensure I have put myself into a comfortable position in terms of work experience/ developing my skills when I go into second year so I can be ready to apply for Vac Schemes & Training Contracts.
I think that's everything but I will update this as I go if I feel like there's anything else that needs to be added in .
Here's to hopefully some more consistent GYG posts this year though I don't think there'll be a lot of updates this coming week since I move into my accommodation tomorrow and then it's Fresher's but I will try my best to keep this updated!

Excited to follow your journey here! :woo: Best of luck with starting uni

Hey guys- Fresher's week is definitely over (have a slight case of Fresher's flu ☹️ )

So far today I've been reading the lecture outline for my Contract law lecture tomorrow morning and I've been doing the pre reading for my contract law tutorial on Thursday but honestly, it feels like it's alot right now but I think once I get the hang of things all the reading and taking effective notes will definitely get easier. Once I finish making my pre-lecture notes, I'm going to clean my room and pop out to the shops and buy food so I can meal prep tomorrow/ on Tuesday and then do my tamil school homework in the evening and take a break before returning my lecture & tutorial prep.

To do:

Ongoing:

making notes from lecture outline document & textbook for contract law formative elements: offer & acceptance

pre- reading for contract law tutorial + annotations & answering the 5 questions (BUTLER MACHINE TOOL CD. LTD. v. EX-CELL-O CORPORATION (ENGLAND) LTD.)

Completed:

cleaned room

completed law families peer mentoring application

completed school tasking application

go food shopping

finalise which society memberships I want to buy & buy them

sort out weekly budget & money for transport

Tamil school homework

Heyya- I've found the student experience really nice so far. I've definitely feel welcomed during Fresher's Week and I'm meant to meet my Personal tutor and Student Support Adviser within the next few weeks too so I'm sure that'll also be really nice. I think one like major bombshell for me has genuinely been how there's so much reading to do but I'm getting used to it. Tutorial prep hasn't been too bad either so far- all in all I've found it very chill so far and I've still had time to hang out with my friends & make new friends as well as attending taster sessions for some societies/ joining them too and joining the women's football team. I will absolutely try my best to keep you updated as the year progresses as to how I'm getting on and hopefully I will see you at KCL for Law in the near future too

today I've had my EU law lecture and I'm currently in the Franklin Wilkin's Library just making sure my notes are fully understandable/ mentions everything I thought about for my contract law tutorial that's at 3-4pm

football training 7:30-9:30 pm

if time then start criminal law tutorial reading & make notes

on going

public law tutorial reading & make notes

Awee thank you, I went to the open day for KCL a couple weeks ago and the vibes at the uni were stellar. I hope you enjoy your degree at KCL

5/10 (including update for 3/10 & 4/10)

okay so Friday I had my legal reasoning lecture and then I just decompressed a little/ let myself unwind and then in the evening I went out with some of my flatmates to celebrate the fact we had survived the first week of uni.

Saturday- okay so I actually ended up sleeping through my alarms so I didn't end up going to Tamil School but then I went home for the day and also because I had my piano lesson in the evening but, when I went home I did some more reading for public law

Today, I've come back to my accomm and I've spent most of the afternoon and evening so far at Maughan library with a friend and we've been going through the reading together and doing the tutorial questions

Today I had my contract law lecture in the morning so after that, I finished writing up my notes from the lecture using the recording I made and then I started and finished all my reading for my contract law tutorial this week and then I just finished answering the questions for the tutorial

Sorry for no update yesterday- I had a pretty packed day with a public law lecture and then tutorials for criminal and public law.

Today I went to my criminal law lecture in the morning and then I went out with a friend who's at another uni so I only just got back to my accomm so Im going to finish up the reading for my EU tutorial for tmrw and finish answering the questions for it and then I'll start catching up on my contract law lecture reading and finish off my notes from my lecture from today

damn its crazy how I remembered your GYG during A-Levels and it motivating me so much. I was able to get into KCL for law too! If you don't mind me asking how are you finding the readings for tutorials because some of them (the public law pre-reading and EU law pre-reading especially) seemed hella long and a bit lofty for 2 weeks into the degree. All the best for your studies and I hope we can both get as best grades as we can!

Hey I'm so sorry I didn't see this until now- I've been a bit busy with all the reading for my tutorials. But I'll reply properly to your message either tomorrow or Friday if that's okay with you?

Omg hey- it's nice to see another KCL law student here and well done for getting into Kings too. And it honestly means so much to me to hear that my A Level GYG helped motivate you

The readings have genuinely been sending me into a word coma if I'm being honest- why's there so much especially for contract and eu 😭😭. I feel like public law for me is a bit similar to some of the content I learned during Alevel Politics so it hasn't been so bad yet but I'm expecting for it to get worse later on when it's not as familiar content. But yeah I've definitely found that there's been a lot to read and manage for EU and contract especially because those two are the modules that have pre reading for the lectures too but hopefully it gets better/ easier to manage as the year progresses!

Wishing you all the best too- we’ve got this!

Omg okay so huge update because I haven't had the time to update my gyg here this past week but the readings are definitely getting to me- I'm managing to stay on track but barely and to top it off I came down with a fever on Tuesday so I've barely had the energy to do any work properly since Tuesday. So am I making this post at midnight whilst finishing off my reading for my EU lecture and tutorial tomorrow? Yup, yes I am. But I don't have too much left to read so I should be asleep very soon.

But in terms of other news, I don't know if I already said it but I made the KCLWFC's 3rd team which is pretty great and I've been enjoying training sessions so far and hopefully during reading week I'll be able to play a match or two.

I also received an email on Tuesday saying that I had been shortlisted for an interview to be one of KCL's student content creators. So that's next Wednesday and hopefully that goes well too 🤞🏽

I also had my interview today (well yesterday by the time I post this) to join the subcommittee team for Tamil Society so hopefully that goes smoothly too because I can only apply to be apart of the committee next year if I'm part of subcomm this year. But I had good vibes from that interview so again hopefully that goes great too.

Now this piece of news I feel like some of you might not know about it as much unless you're a law student at uni too but I've been selected for KCL's Law School School Tasking programme. It's basically a programme where you go and teach the law to primary school children (Year5-6 I think) and then there's some sort of competition with the other Law Schools who also take part in it in March which seems really cool too. Honestly when I applied I didn't think I would get in but, I did and I'm really excited for that. Anyways that doesn't officially start until second semester so I've got a bit of time before I start on that too.

My final pieces of news- I've sort of become a keyboard teacher??? So since my bestfriend's mum is the headteacher of the tamil school I've been going to to learn Tamil, she asked me if I could teach some of the little kids there the keyboard as their parents have been asking for lessons as part of the Tamil school's musical programme but they didn't have a teacher who could teach the piano/ keyboard until my bestfriend's mum remembered I could play the piano. So I guess I have my first teaching lesson this Saturday- I'm lowkey kind of excited kind of nervous but I'm honestly so proud of myself too because I was so scared that once I finished my grade 8 this year, I would just completely forget about the piano and lose touch with my skills so this is definitely a way I can keep my piano skills going.

Oh wait one last bit of news (last one I promise 😭) but I've also started mentoring year 12/13 students via Zero Gravity. I found the platform and my mentor really helpful throughout the whole UCAS application and everything inbetween, especially with my Oxford interviews, so I thought it was only fitting that I give back to the community that helped me so much and try my best to help someone else reach their goals and dreams too!

I think that's everything for now so I'm going to finish off my EU law reading and then hit the pillows.

Okay I'm typing this out from Maughan library rn during my break before I go back to studying (yes I'm well aware it's 9pm but I find it easier for me to lock in at night and I'm almost done so I'll prolly leave around 9:30/ latest 10)
Anyways I've just finished my public law tutorial reading for this week as they changed it from Tuesday to tomorrow but I'm lowkey a bit nervous cos the reading we had to do was in preparation for a 750-1k word case note essay thing that's due in a few weeks- I mean it should be fine plus I'm sure they'll give us advice on how to structure it but, first ever university assignment so yeahhhhh.

I'm going to finish up my criminal law tutorial reading and answer the questions for that now and then head back to my accomm
