Are You Ready to Start Your Studies?—New Starter Checklist & Welcome!

Hi everyone,
I’m one of the Student Ambassadors here at the University of Nottingham and wanted to say a huge welcome to all our new starters! 🎉 Starting university is such an exciting step, but I know it can feel a little overwhelming too—especially if you’re an international student or moving away from home for the first time.

Here’s a New Starter Checklist that might help you feel more prepared:
1. Admin Essentials

Complete your online enrollment and upload your ID documents.

Check that your student finances (or scholarships) are sorted and linked to your bank account.

Save key university emails and log-in details—you’ll need them often.

2. Accommodation & Moving In

Start packing early—focus on essentials first (bedding, kitchen basics, study supplies).

Plan how you’ll get to campus—trams, buses, or walking routes are all popular options.

Bring something personal to make your room feel homely (photos, a favourite blanket, fairy lights).

3. Academic Prep

Take a quick look at your course welcome materials but don’t panic-buy every book yet.

Get a notebook, pens, or whatever helps you stay organised.

Familiarise yourself with Moodle and your university email you’ll be using them a lot.

4. Life Skills & Wellbeing

Learn a couple of simple meals you’ll be glad you did in Week 1!

Register with a local GP once you arrive.

Think about budgeting little things like meal planning can really help.

5. Social Life & Settling In

Check out Welcome Week events and society fairs they’re a great way to meet new people.

Join any international or student community events if you’re coming from abroad they’re super friendly and welcoming.

Remember, it’s normal to feel nervous but you’re definitely not alone.

If you have any questions about starting at Nottingham from accommodation to Freshers’ Week to settling into your course feel free to ask below. Other students and I will be happy to share tips! Who’s excited to start? And what’s on your personal checklist?
