royal holloway commute help!!

i need some urgent help. i will be commuting to royal holloway uni and want to figure out my best commute. first i want to ask, is the national railway ticket based only or can i use my contactless? also im so confused as to how a railway card works and how i would use it if i were to get one. i would need both an oyster for tfl travel and then once i leave tfl zones i would need the railway card but apparently u cant tap a railway card so how would i get that discount? im trying to figure out if its worth signing up to a student bank for a free railway card but i genuinely have no idea how any of this works. i was also considering a route where i go to heathrow terminal 5 then take the First Bus, but only issue there is that it runs like every 30 mins apparently. any help would be much appreciated, i have much to figure out before i start on monday. thanks!!

There are paper-based National Rail tickets, but recently the contactless zone expanded to include Egham. So you CAN use a contactless card to exit and/or enter Egham station! However, I don't think there's a way to add your railcard to contactless payments

I'm not too sure how it works with tickets bought online/the app for South Western Railway, but if you're buying a paper ticket at a machine, there should be a button (sometimes not so easy to spot) that says 'add railcard'. You press that button and then choose the relevant railcard, then press the button to confirm you have that railcard. If you're buying from someone at the station, you just show them your card, either on the app or a physical card!

If you're using your TfL student Oyster card to travel towards Egham on the train, you would need to tap in wherever you get on, and then get OFF the train at Feltham (which is the end of Zone 6), tap out on your Oyster, and then re-enter the station with your discounted (with railcard) extension ticket towards Egham and get on the next train to Egham. That could get a bit tedious and tricky if there are train delays, etc. in terms of timing things to get to uni on time. My personal recommendation (if you can afford it) would be to not use your student Oyster for any train journeys to Egham and to just buy a discounted ticket using a railcard for your whole train journey - to avoid the whole tapping out/in at Feltham scenario. You can buy individual tickets each day, or there should be options to buy tickets valid for longer (either a week, a month, or a whole year!)

so the railway card can be applied to my oyster too? does that also mean i have to purchase a ticket everyday in order to board the train cuz i feel like that might be too long. is it worth getting the railway card if im just gonna get a student oyster card. thanks so much for the help.

Sorry, I should have specified: a railcard can definitely be applied to a non-student Oyster. A quick Google (which I recommend doing, to ease your fears!) indicates that it *can* also be added to a student Oyster but you'd only get 1/3 off *offpeak* fares (which doesn't help you get to uni in the morning! It does mention something about 1/3 off daily caps, but I don't think train fares have daily caps...)

As my post above says, there are options for longer valid tickets (definitely monthly and annual, less sure about weekly but I imagine that might be possible too). You wouldn't need to buy a train ticket every single day! :nah:

Personally, I think a railcard is worth getting, since you're travelling beyond the Oyster card boundary regularly. Plus as I mentioned in your other thread, you might end up travelling via trains outside London to visit your new friends during holidays.

Good luck for Monday

Hi there,

We just wanted to check in to see how the commute is going so far, are you finding it okay getting to Royal Holloway? If you still need any help with travel routes, parking, or tips for commuting, let us know. There’s also support and advice available through the Student Services Centre if you’d like to chat with someone about making your journey easier.

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London Official Rep
