A levels

I'm currently taking bio chem and maths a levels. I'm thinking of doing either like medicine or finance at uni. My school offers further maths and i know a lot of the top unis ask for it for like econ/finance courses but i'm unsure whether i should do it bc bio a level i have heard is quite difficult. further maths does mean more maths lessons a week but i currently do not have a lot of work (this will probably change in a few weeks). do you think its possible to do bio chem maths and further maths and still get good grades? is fm necessary? THANKS XX

I did those same A-Levels in 2023 and Maths/Further Maths were my chill out lessons compared to Bio and Chem. Bio is easy to learn but there is lots of content, chem is less content but more complex. I did get AAAA but still missed my firm choice (LSE) and in hindsight, I do wish that I dropped an a-level since I would’ve got better grades in the 3 left. (Saying that, I did ask my sixth form to drop one in Y13 and they wouldn’t let me)

Do you have the opportunity to drop a level in year 13? If so, then I would recommend it, considering that by then, you should be more sure what to do. I think you should try to get work experience in both fields this year and see how you find them.

There are plenty of Econ / Finance courses that do not require FM - ask this question on the Econ forum and someone will be able to provide a list - (2) Economics and PPE university courses Forum - The Student Room

we have to take 4 alevels altogether with fm, which we r not allowed to drop. i have got work experience arranged but thats later in the year and i only have until the end of september to decide whether to do it or not

do u think taking further maths and bio (which is quite content heavy) was why you thought u could have done better or was it something else? (well done btw aaaa is amazing! ) right now i'm getting a bit bored in maths bc we r going at a slow pace, so i feel like i could handle further maths, but i'm scared next yr it will get incredibly difficult and ik my skl won't let me drop

I never really revised as much as I should’ve as it mostly came naturally to me, but I did want to drop Chemistry but was told no. I found biology relatively easy to understand the content; it was hard learning the exact wording for the mark scheme. You wording in biology is very specific. I’d keep further maths if I was you, even if you do bad in it, it makes regular maths so much easier and looks impressive to unis. One guy in my class kept further maths but just never sat the final assessments, so he didn’t revise it at the end of Y13 but used the start of Y13 to boost his knowledge for reg a level maths

If you find maths easy, further maths won’t be the a level you struggle with. It’ll be either bio or chem

How about starting it and seeing how you go? Then dropping it if need be.

Yes definitely. I originally took them thinking I’d want to do medicine, but deep down I knew I never wanted to do it, I just wanted to be called “Doctor” and hence I didn’t have much interest for the subjects. The best advice is to take subjects you enjoy, mine was maths, and you’ll find the lessons doable and relatively enjoyable. At the end of Y13, I hated chemistry, especially organic chem, because I didn’t like the subject and shouldn’t have took it in the first place

Hi there!

I am currently a second year medic at Sheffield. I did biology, chemistry and psychology for my A Levels so if you have any questions about these specifically please let me know. In terms of biology, of course everyone is different, but I would say the content itself is mostly okay to understand but there is a lot of it.

I know some of my friends did 4 A Levels including further maths and still got good grades but I wouldn't say it is necessary as most universities only require 3. I have linked the A-Z undergraduate course page here for Sheffield that you could have a look at to get an idea of different courses entry requirements.

If you have any other questions about medicine or university in general let me know!😀
