Hi @Denzo1966

I hope you are well! Congratulations on getting into university at Southampton first of all! Southampton is a great place and I am sure you will have lots of fun there! You are aware however that Birmingham and Southampton are nearly 3 hours apart? Are you suggesting that you will live in Birmingham and commute to Southampton when you need to be at uni? Or are you just asking for travel to Southampton from Birmingham as a one off?

If it is just a one off trip then I would suggest a coach. Companies like Flixbus and National Express offer cheap tickets, usually a lot cheaper than trains! However, If you are wanting to commute from Birmingham to Southampton I would advise that you maybe look for some accommodation abit nearer as you will be travelling for up to 6 hours a day if not more.

It would be near impossible to get to any early morning sessions at uni as you would have to leave super early and if you have any later lectures you might not be able to get back or it will be very late.

I hope this response has helped, let me know if you have any more questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hi Denzo,

Congratulations on getting a place at Southampton! If you've already started, how are you ifinding it?

As the LJMU rep, Matt, said, Birmingham and Southampton are three hours travel apart. If you have your timetable already, I'm sure you'll have seen you have lectures at different times of the day. So you'll probably find you need to get the train sometimes, or stay overnight.

That being said, cheap travel options are:
National Express coach
Flixbus
Train (via The Train Line - you can get an under 25 railcard which might help take off about 1/3 of the cost of travel)
As you're coming from Kuwait I'm assuming you don't currently have a car. Though with the mileage you'd need it would be cheaper to not use a car, I think.

I would also strongly advise looking at the commute and seeing if it's worth doing something like stay in Southampton during the week and go to Birmingham on the weekends to stay with friends. I think the commute sounds unsustainable if you end up with a timetable with lectures every day for instance.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!
