Do you have any thoughts about which medium you are likely to use during your degree?

have you been to any open days?

looked at any online graduate shows?

Are you only considering studying in London?

Hi @Tomatotina

I have lots of friends here who study fine art and really enjoy it. I have also been to see some of their work in the exhibitions they have in and around the campus and it looks great!

Do you have any key deciding factors? I have a few posts I will link which might help you decide what is important to you when deciding on a university.

Tips on Making a University Choice - The Student Room

I will also share a few insights that you may find useful to know.
Firstly Kingston is in a great and very creative location. There is even a gallery on campus along with all the galleries and exhibitions you can access in London. It is great for inspiration and for getting some industry connections and hands on work experience. There is also a organisation called Studio KT1 which is a creative agency which works closely with the university. You can find creative job opportunities, they also run events and hold exhibitions showcasing student work.

The campus you will be based at is Knights Park. Which you can find much more info on this post An Overview of Knights Park Campus - The Student Room

At Knights Park there are lost of workshops that are available to all students such as woodwork, ceramics, printmaking and more. Meaning as a fine art student you can experiment with a range of mediums.

I would really recommend going to an open day for the universities you are interested in. It is a great chance to get a feel for the university as to what it might be like to live and study there, see the facilities and speak to current students and lectures. I hope this helps and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask

Hey @Tomatotina

I am Jess and I am a 3rd Year Fine Art Student.

Here at the University of Southampton we have a specific arts campus called Winchester School of Art! (WSA)
All the creative degrees are based here which makes the campus have a cosy like-minded feel to it.
The campus is located in the heart of the city of Winchester and we have a vibrant high street right on our doorstep, a nature reserve next door and have the wonderful transport connections into London, the South Coast and of course the New Forest!

In the Fine Art department here at WSA, we have access to large studio study spaces, a library full of artist books, workshop spaces that cover the likes of metal work, wood work, printmaking, painting, casting, digital printing, video and photography. All the workshop spaces have knowledgeable technicians which are always available for a chat about your work and are amazing for providing technical advice. Fine art students have access to all of these workshop spaces where they are not limited to what type of work they would like to make. This remains fluid throughout the course. Therefore, if you would like to make a sculpture and then a painting to go alongside it, you can!
We also have our own gallery space at The Winchester Gallery, where professional exhibitions are held as well as student based exhibitions.

We have some upcoming Open Days taking place and i would really recommend you to book a slot and come have a look! One of the most important things I believe with deciding on an art course, is to see the spaces you will be studying in. This way you can imagine yourself being there and see if it is a right fit for you

I hope this helps provide you an insight into the University of Southampton Fine Art Course. If you have questions, feel free to ask away!
