Hi there,

You sound like you're in the exact same position as I was in! I also had a 2-ish hour commute each way and wanted a hybrid touch laptop.

I got a 15.6 inch Dell Inspiron 15 (touchscreen/flippable, and about £500), which was a very good friend to me at uni. I could run 20+ tabs on its RAM (mostly journal articles, word docs, spreadsheets, internet pages and SPSS) and it was also compatible with MS office and some people on my course also used it for R and IBM software. It had a great battery life (I used to use it all morning lead-less in the library with a moderate screen brightness), and it has lasted me now 7 years.

Some people on my course had Apples, but these are very pricey so not the most suitable for saving money.

If you have the time wy don't you head to Currys PC World and have a look at a few in the flesh - if you get the Unidays app this also includes some tech discounts so you could get a little bit of money off if you end up with certain brands.

I hope this helps and best of luck for the coming year! 🙂

Hey there 👋

My name is Siobhan and I’m a recent graduate from the University of Lancashire. This is a great question!!

I personally used my iPad Air 4th Generation when I was in my lectures because the battery was pretty good on it and it was really easy to write notes on with the pen. However, not only is the iPad itself SOOOO expensive, but the pens, keyboard and cases are too!!

I actually ended up using the Microsoft tablets in the library as I could rent these through my uni and I found that these are so much easier to use and because they’re smaller they were a lot lighter too which would be perfect for travelling!

I would have a look in the shops in person before making a decision and then you can speak to the experts then, but from my experience I would probably recommended gadget by Microsoft, Lenovo (my laptop is this brand), Asus or HP (my old laptop brand).

Also make sure to see if you’re eligible for student discounts in the shops you go to 🙂

Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions.

Siobhan (Student Ambassador for the University of Lancashire)
