Gap year - dentistry

I wanted to apply to dent but flopped the ucat. I rlly wanna try hard next year and hopefully make competitive applications to QMUL, Manchester, Plymouth amd Sheffield . I rlly rlly wanna get into QMUL. I got 1700 B3 this year. Next year I’m rlly aiming for 2200+ and I will start practicing a year early. Will a gap year rlly be bad , even if I get 3 A*s in my a levels? I’m alr predicted A*A*A. I rlly don’t want to be seen as dumb or not as intelligent bc I didn’t get in the first time.

i wanted to get into med but i also flopped my ucat. taking a gap year is fine; so many people take gap years not necessarily to retake anything. as long as you get somethinf done in that gap year like volunteering, work experience etc, you wont be disadvantaged

Also to add to this, I’m Indian and there is a weird stigma around taking a year off before uni. That being said my parents are supportive of me taking a gap year since I rlly wanna do dentistry, but in our family friend group there is only one other person who took a gap year before dentistry. I just feel like I’m gonna be judged and seen as dumb. Also I’m gonna feel a year behind, although I have one friend who is also taking a gap year and I have friends younger than me so I won’t be lonely, I still feel like I fxcked up my life. I feel like absolute shi. And also I take one I will be 20 when I join uni as I’m born before 20th of sep. not going to uni at 19 feels like I’ve wasted my ‘teenage’ years, I only had one life and I fxcked it up.

You got more then enough time to revise for ucat after taking your A levels, so most important to ace your A levels, also plan what you will do in your gap year.

Hey,
I took a gap year this year - and I'm also Indian so I completely understand how you must be feeling - its been hard with my parents coming to terms with this gap year however in the end if it is Dentistry you really want to do , and you will have more time to prepare for the UCAT , you can defo get in next year and it will all be worth it in the end.
And also people take gap years ALL the time for Dentistry - ppl on your course will have taken gap years ! feel free to dm me:smile:

I got similar to u on my ucat 1750 and B3 and want to dentistry too. All that judging stuff isn’t even serious at the end of the day it’s ur future don’t let what other people may think get in the way if ur passionate about dentistry go for it!! I hear what ur saying about ur gonna 20 and stuff i was litch saying this to my friends to but w a course like dentistry Gao year is defo not rare there will be others on the same boat- the gap year could be a good thing, time to get more experience a job save travel it’s up to you but i feel like if u decide maybe u don’t want to do a gap year that’s fairs but don’t let it be cos aunties may judge you or cos ur gonna be 20 when u start cos at the end ur goal is to be a dentist ur path may be slightly different to what u expect but as long as you get to what u wanna do.

no it won’t be bad at all, no disadvantage at all for unis and 100% the admissions team & interviewers wouldnt judge you or discriminate.

i also very much doubt students in your year would judge because so many people (including me rn) take gap years for med and dent because specifically those two courses are just so freaking competitive. don’t worry. also make sure you don’t burn out w the ucat revision…like i don’t recommend starting a year early but if you rly want to, at least do v v minimal revision at the beginning

Hi there
A member of my family also did badly in his UCAT but took a gap year and applied with achieved 2A*A and this time 2960 UCAT, 3 interviews, and 2 offer. Also worked during the gap year, the money he made is very handy especially now studying dentistry in London which expensive city. Also did more dentistry work experience and re written his PS. Focus on your A level and get as many A*as possible. Good luck

Heyy, m in a tough situation too, similar to Anonymous_Fly with Brown parents, but worst - I can't move out which is the biggest flop m in with Manchester being my only option - my SJT came out bad #B3 😭, my score was okay tho so IF my parents agree with a gap year, I rllyyyy wanna make it to Dentistry next year so is there any way u could ask that member of family for any tips , like from A-levels to gap year n UCAT 🙏 plz.

Hi there
B3 is not the end of your application this year. What is your actual UCAT score. What about Plymouth dental school. I do not know your GCSE. If good, you can apply to Belfast dental school. If and only if there are no interviews, then work very hard in Year 13 to get as many A* as possible. Doing the UCAT again will be much easier . If you get yourself good job during the gap year such as supermarket etc and earn good money you can your family with bill and or not being a financial burden on them. So, getting A*, high UCAT, and a job will lift your morals and that of your family. During the gap year, you can learn to cook with your family and go to the gym to get fit.

Why can't you get out? Are they chaining you to your bed?
